An unusual day this... the water was at a good height being at 1 on the gauge and it was fairly cloudy (and windy). I caught 5 trout in about 15 minutes and moved down the beat and saw nothing at all for hours. I went back to the top of the beat to work down. I saw one salmon leap. Within 6 casts I hooked it! It was a modest 8lb hen fish in good condition. She didn't stop for oxygen when putting her back so I guess she was ok. So, my first Wye salmon has landed!!

Fished 9.30 - 4.30 p.m. Guage at 1.17m. Good news - the water temperature has dropped from 19/20 late last week to 16 degrees. Relatively wind-free and cloudy as per forecast. Midge and sedges p.m. Also some YMs and PWs. Was a pretty tough day but with some rising fish from time to time. Fish taken on Baby Sunfly a.m., and HE and PW emergers p.m. Also a couple on small HE nymphs. Most fish still small though, 8-10 inches, with just one 15" trout and a 12" grayling thrown in for good measure.

Area:Lugg & Arrow
Beat:Hindwell - Knill
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
My first time on the Hindwell. Not much fly life about and few fish rising. Very overgrown and many trees across the river too, so not an easy one to fish, also for such a small stream there are some very deep pools so beware. I managed to catch 6 wbt to a dry fly - all quite small though.
NB - note to WUF, there is a lot of Himalayan Balsam on this beat.
