We caught 16 barbel between us, biggest 9.10. The river fished up till 2pm then switched off. Very good straight, one of the beats that's worth the money.

A slightly more challenging day than we expected given the favourable conditions: river up after recent rain, and falling slowly with good pace and colour. Started at the end of the beat off the island and gradually worked our way back to the fishing hut. One barbel came at about 11am, the rest at dusk, with some clonking chub in-between. A lovely and well maintained beat, with plenty to go at.

Fishing ledgered deadbaits for Pike. Had a few takes in the morning, but didn't connect with anything apart from one, which was a large eel that dropped off just at the edge. I'm sure at least one of the other takes was also an eel. Been a long time since I've had a proper eel on deadbaits, so good to know there are some about as they are pretty rare these days.
Don't think the Pike were really in the mood. Conditions looked good in the morning, but the river pace picked up a little as the day progressed. I'll be back soon as the temperature drops.

With the river starting to rise yesterday (it was up about 3 feet from its level of last week), I had high hopes for today, although certainly never expected to catch that number of barbel. I intended to start at the lower end of the beat and picked an area I'd not fished before. Got a barbel first cast, and then regularly throughout the day, so extremely lucky to just drop on them from the off. Fish ranged from 4lb 8ozs to 9lb 6ozs. All caught on pellet/PVA bag method. Looking forward to a second day on this beat tomorrow.

Beat:The Eyton Beat

Fishing:Winter Grayling

The river was very low and gin clear, and the strong breeze did not help the fishing. Nothing showing, but signs of spooked fish as we moved along the beat. The out of season trout and the grayling all fell to small weighted nymphs, but there is no sign of the grayling shoaling up yet as the weather continues to be mild.
I have fished this beat for a few years, but rarely have I seen the upstream section so difficult to access.

A picturesque stretch, no fish encountered and access is tricky as stated, a local told me the beat is great in mayfly season.

River had about a foot of extra water on when I arrived but started to fall after about 2 hours and the chub started feeding. 6 cracking chub all caught on meat down the edge using a centre pin touch ledgering. Also a bonus barbel late on. A great day, felt more like summer in the afternoon when the sun came out.

First time on this beat, and only second time on the Wye. Fished the wrong area (fast, shallow water) for most of the day but still managed a nice barbel of 8lb 5oz which held in the strong current for at least 10 minutes despite using a powerful barbel rod.
I had an eel at dusk which considering their declining population was not unwelcome.
Lovely day out saw kingfishers, buzzards, wagtails and woodpeckers all in very peaceful location. Some swims tricky to get to but this is the Wye not a commercial.
