25lbs salmon caught on fly Cafn. 50 minutes to land on switch rod.. River clear caught 2010 hrs..

1 Salmon

Another great day on the Wye. We started in a swim that's been kind before and it started well with good barbel action until they backed off a bit so a longer cast got a couple more until they totally switched off. The army of chub then took over and it was crazy action with bites coming as soon as we touched bottom.
We decided to move and try to find a few more barbel and so upped tackle and went for a completely new area. This paid off with another six barbel and no chub.
Today's wildlife included long tailed tits and a very close encounter with a kingfisher going at full speed being chased by another.

The potato field in full bloom looked nice too.

2 small brown trout taken on a PT nymph. Very little surface activity. Overcast conditions. This is a lovely beat with a lot of variety.

The river was lower than I thought it would be which made for tricky fishing but a rusty Klinkhammer worked its charm at the head of the pools. A few hours fishing followed by a good hike around the hills made for a good day.

My first visit to this beat. It looked very 'fishy' at first glance and didn't disappoint with plenty of fish showing throughout the day. Several of the grayling were over 12" (mostly cock fish) and the best trout was a chunky 16". Two of the salmon parr 'others' were caught on the same cast. All fish came to a team of 3 nymphs, some weighted, some not, with a definite preference for a touch of red in them (red tag, Hancock's pet) but olive spiders were also taken. There was a big hatch of flies from 5-6pm that the fish mostly ignored at the surface but after 7pm, with fewer flies apparent, there was considerable surface activity. I probably should have changed to drys then but with fish regularly taking the unweighted nymphs I didn't bother.

Two grayling caught on a wet fly and released, both about 1lb.
River conditions very good and where the bank had been cleared it made access much easier.
It would be helpful to be able to see beat maps before booking the beat, it is only the fact that we know this part of the river that made it relatively easy to decide where to fish.

Pulled even more himalayan balsam there seems no end of the bloody stuff

2 of fish around 3/4 lb and 1 about 4 ozs IC

Only had couple of hours fishing on this stunning beat. Caught a couple of trout. Fished the hotspots with flying c. A Salmon showed off the wayward willow lie enjoyed spinning the Llangoed pool & the rapids below. Couple of fish showing in the Llangoed pool. Will defo fish this beat again hopefully for the day with the fly rod.
