The river was in flood and heavily coloured but levels were just starting to come down. We fished the lower beat but a lot of the pegs were unfishable with difficulty in holding the bottom when you did manage to find a suitable place to fish.
We did manage 3 Barbel to 5lb and 3 Chub to 3lb on pellet so not a complete disaster.

First day of a 5 day break on the Wye for 2 of us and joined by a friend for today. The most successful day of our trip in terms of numbers caught, from a river slightly up and coloured. After driving 175 miles in the rain it stopped shortly after we arrived and we settled into swims upstream of the parking area . 1 rod caught 13 barbel, 1 caught 8 barbel and 2 chub and the other caught 4 barbel . The best barbel was 7lb 15oz and all were caught on variations of the pellet and open ended feeder approach .

One very small brown trout taken on a Para Adams. This was my first experience of wild stream fishing and it is definitely challenging! Water lower than expected. One or two mayfly about but mostly very small emergers in the surface film.

We arrived at the car parking area on this beat to find some low life had fly tipped a large amount of waste. With regards to the fishing this beat has always come up trumps for us and 12 barbel to 9lb 15oz and two chub were a good return. however,we must fully support the anglers who had to clear swims before they started, this beat has limited swims especially with the loss of Boys rock. Some work should have been done as from a health and safety point of view the banks were extremely dangerous not only for the anglers but also for the safe return of the the fish. This is now an overpriced beat and the Wye & Usk need to up their game to ensure safety after all there are few swims that you can fish.

Rained all morning but river looked superb, just enough extra flow/colour. Fed three or four swims when I arrived and I caught steadily from 7:00 am. Stopped raining at about 11:30 am, and then the river started to rise alarmingly, within an hour all but 1 of the swims I had fed were unfishable, disappeared beneath an angry chocolate flood and the fish stopped feeding (only managed one chub in the afternoon/evening). The 7 Barbel ranged from 5lbs 4oz to 7lbs 2oz all caught on feeder/pellet. The chub all fell to the same method and were all around the albs mark.
First time on this stretch for me and as per normal I was not disappointed, thanks WUF.
Only saw two canoes all day and those passed by on the flood so quickly you could have water ski'd behind them!

No fish - some bites/takes, but river up following rain for 2 days, and very coloured. Also meant that getting to the islands was impossible. Nevertheless, nice to be on that water again though bank navigation getting much more difficult due to overgrowth....

Decided to fish after the heavy rain had departed. Arrived at midday and water .65m with some colour. Put up the spinning rod with Red and gold single hook FC and on arrival at the rock a fish showed. It took one cast, and twenty minutes later after a battle, I was rewarded with a 34" 15lb freshly run fish.
At around 3pm I saw a fish at the same spot, moved above it and with a cast upstream had the fish on. However, it detached after several jumps, another fresh run fish of around 6lb. Guess this fish was on the move as the water had risen to .8m, and contact was made about 10 yds upstream from where it showed.
After a couple more hours above and below the bridge the water had risen to .9m and had become quite dirty, so we left the water. No trout seen at all, but some mayfly about mid afternoon. My colleague had no luck.
---and Wales topped their group at Euro 2016!!! What a day!!!

The second day of our party's early season foray onto the Wye saw us looking at both Wyebank and Courtfield, having fished Backney with mixed success the previous day. The river was about 3 feet above summer levels and still coloured from heavy rain earlier in the week. A cursory check of the bottom pool saw us plumb for the slower swims of Courtfield. The river was pushing through but it looked perfect and so it proved. NC and RM squeezed into the drain cover as the rain arrived whereas JC opted for the fallen tree in the wooded section. Both swims were prolific throughout the day, with sport only slowed by the sun which made a welcome appearance in the afternoon but we caught throughout. JC had a superb fish of 10lb 6oz but he was similarly impressed by an eel of 1lb 10oz. The average size of fish on this beat is impressive, most fish were in the 8lb to 9lb bracket. Great to be back on this wonderful river once again.

The river was falling (0.88m on the gov Ross gauge) but still fairly heavily coloured, debris wasn't too evident. Not a bad day all in all, rain until lunchtime and bright hot sunshine in the afternoon. Barbel weren't feeding as hard as expected but still put in a creditable appearance, the fish ranging from about 5 to 8lbs, all the chub caught were between 2.5 and 4lb, pellet and feeder tactics caught all the fish. Thank you again to Wuf for an excellent day.
