5 fish in the first 1 1/2hrs ranging from 12" to 14"all on heavy nymphs in the deeper pools. A few LDOs started to come off about 11ish, so changed to duo and managed one more fish at 10" from junction pool. Continual trickle hatch of LDOs for most of the day with a few March browns and Grannom, but fish showing no interest. This has been the case in my last three outings on the Usk. Suppose the northerly breeze didn't help the cause.

Looking back through the catch returns for this beat, I realised it was over four years since I had fished it. Back then I had a cold, blank day but I'm pleased to say it was a little better this time. But only a little. The only fish I saw all day were those I caught. Only one small grayling came to a size 16 weighted nymph in the morning, so I changed tactics and fished deeper in the afternoon. This was more productive with three more grayling and one trout to show for my efforts.
The wind and cloud kept it chilly for most of the day and the river was carrying a bit of colour which I certainly wasn't expecting after such a dry week. I'm sure when I first started fishing here some years ago, I would expect to take more trout than grayling in a day. Looking through the catch returns, the pattern seems to have reversed in recent years - is this just my imagination or has something changed? Either way, it's still a beautiful place to spend a day and well worth another go later in the season. Maybe I'll meet more trout then.

Well just as we all thought spring was here, the temperature dropped drastically! First time on this beat and wow what a stunning piece of water it is. Sadly today not many trout were playing ball. Nymphing produced zip nada, and just as I thought of packing up, there was a brief rise by a few fish in two pools to olives. The trout to hand was about 13 inches and I hooked two of a heavy size, both of which threw the hook. I will be back come May to give this a good go. The trout rose between 2.30-3.00 pm, with not a rise before or after.

Lovely day by the river, bright sunshine so not great for fishing, also great water clarity so we were able to see some salmon lying in the river in Cock Pit pool, a few fish showed during the day, but nothing taking our flies!
Although my brother got a cracking 15lb bonus pike on a yellow flying condom from the Cadora pool.
All in all, a good day helped along by a cracking bank side lunch!
