Fished the top 1/4 of the gorge, and 1/4 mike up from Pontsarn. Despite it looking like the dishonest place on earth, I think that upstream of Pontsarn may well fish better than the gorge, partly due to the Fact that it's really tricky to get into a casting spot without spooking the fish.
That said, took three fingerlings to a small gold head, all fished with a longish leader to avoid spooking. Great morning session, there are plenty of fish there to be had.
I went on the Merthyr Tydfil angling association Facebook page to ask about patterns and spots and I have to say that they were amazing - Gavin Jehu (club secretary), Mostyn Reynolds, Ceri Thomas and Anthony Rees were all hugely helpful. Certainly one of the friendliest clubs I've encountered.

Water going with a good pace but terribly coloured up. fished duo tungsten with a 3mm gold beaded Baetis with a hint of orange at the thorax and a pink bead on dropper. I did not think the pink beaded flies would be out till December but with the water the way it was it was the only bead in my box that I could see 6 inches under the surface.. and most trout and both grayling took the pink beaded Baetis on dropper. this beat to me is a cracker , there are some decent fish within this beat. it,s just finding them!! . trout ranged from 6-14 inches and both grayling 10 inches. I hooked a few a fair bit bigger but once in the fast water all managed to slip hook.

Fished from 5 till 8 pm. Not a lot happening but managed to catch 3 on dry. 1st on Griffiths gnat, other 2 on iron blue. All in fast water at heads of the pools. Had a few Kingfishers and a water vole? As company. Water still a little coloured after recent downpours.

Was hoping to have a go at the many chub and barbel with the trotting rod after a quick swing of the fly-rod but alas the river was too high and coloured for both; rugby was good though!

River was coloured after the week of rainfall we've had, and looked around 1 to 2 feet higher than normal conditions. 2 trout were caught out of the lower riffle/rock section just below the church both fish were caught using Czech nymphing duo style largest of the two approx 10-12 inch. Another fish was lost at the net just above the mentioned section in the slower slack water this was caught on an olive klinkhammer. And many other fish were seen rising here but inaccessible due to the difficult wading.
3 fish were caught approx 1/4 mile above the measuring station just above the rocky rapids area where the water is slack. All 3 fish were caught casting to rising fish but all caught on spiders fished on duo setup. Largest fish weighed 2 lb 13oz (brown trout). Many other fish were lost further up the river in the section of rocks with the grass sections in the river. Very difficult wading in places and a wading staff would be advisable, lot of areas require a bit of scrambling to get down to them but definitely worth the effort.
Will definitely return in better conditions

river was running a bit and coloured.
First ever Barbel for Alan around 8.30 and a second within an hour to just short of 9 Lbs so he was very pleased with that as was I for him. Missed bites and lost fish followed. iddle part of day was quiet. oth had more bites and lost fish before a late fish each to my relief to round off another good day on the Wye. All fish to pellet and feeders in the slacks, a misplaced cast helped us on our way. Faster water was unproductive.

Arrived to find that overnight rain had pushed the river back up to about 2ft with a fair bit of colour. Fished until about 7pm on a nicely falling and clearing river but unfortunately no sign of a salmon. Fabulous place to catch nothing though!
