.......arrived at 1.30 after a unproductive morning on the Dulas middle beat....flies hatching fish jumping but v. selective....determined to fish dry fly and took 4 small fish on various size 18 olive patterns. Beautiful now the spring colours are appearing! Anybody new to this beat should be aware that the bedrock is super slippery when wading...take care, nearly came a cropper couple of times!

Cold down stream wind made fishing challenging, occasional small hatch of olives got a few fish rising. Two fish about 1.0 lb

Two weeks on from my last visit and the Arrow was a more familiar height and colour. A week of cold mornings (during which County cricketers have endured snow showers) seems to have put a pause on the season. An early afternoon hatch of Olives on the upper section induced a brief rise and three fish to hand in quick succession. Other than that it was nymphs fished through the bends that proved successful. Three fish were in the region of 12”, the rest 6”-8” and all perfect. Stopping to change a fly at one point I glanced up and saw a Kingfisher at close quarters surveying the river from it’s perch. They really are remarkably beautiful birds.

A rather bright day coupled with a chilly wind blowing down river meant conditions werent ideal. The river, however, was at a good level and there were a small number of insects hatching throughout the day. 3 fish hooked, two of which ended in hook pulls! Various takes, most of which were thanks to a brief, but large hatch that occurred around 1230pm. Fished mainly dries. We were rather disappointed to find another angler on the beat who was staying at the nearby campsite. He claimed to have been given (free) permission from the beat owner.
All in all...it felt tough fishing in comparison to three other stretches of the Usk that my friend had fished earlier in the week.
Thanks Wye & Usk

What a difference a day makes, yesterday very windy and difficult, today still windy but a degree or so warmer and seemed much calmer. River in good condition and at a good hight. First WBT after about one hour at mid point on beat taken on GBN, in the middle of a hail storm! What fun.
When I wandered up towards the top of the beat there was another fisherman at the top pool, this seemed odd as I had booked the two tickets available, he did move away before I was able to speak to him and did not see him again during the day. WUF, is there a land owner rod on this beat? Or should he have not been on the beat?
Anyhow back to the bottom of the beat for coffee and then onto the water just below the bridge, good hatch of Olivis and managed four WBT on LDO over the next hour or so and missed more than this! A couple of largish fish, well over 1lb, and all good fun.
Overall an excellent day, and so different from previous day, thanks WUF for the information and will be back on the Usk later in year.
