9 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. The river was still very low and clear this morning as little rain has fallen in this catchment lately. However, it's coming now and cattle are already lying down in the fields under lowering clouds. Has anybody else noticed the apparently abandoned and overgrown orchard by the footpath on the way back to the car parking place? If I am not mistaken it mostly contains Blakeney Red pears, which used to be made into perry. However, the trees are tall and the fruit far beyond reach. My father, who reckoned he knew something about pruning, used to say: "Let a pear tree tower."

Having had a great day yesterday arrived at Courtfield with high hopes we all fished the meadow I managed a Chubb and a small jack pike. The others had no action. Disappointing return from a stretch that we have had good results from in the past.

River looked perfect - about 2 foot up with a tinge but this made the broken water swims upstream difficult to access. I used a rope to get into one then sat out in the water. Caught a good barbel - possibly 9lb plus on meat casting across and lost another on double 8 mm pellet. Strange no chub. Mick fished nearer the start and in his 3rd swim caught another big barbel - again well over 8lb on meat and a 4lb chub. He cast to 3/4 as far bank shallowed up a bit.
Looks like a boundary where fish are fewer but good in terms of size. Fished feeders all day with pellets ,hemp and a bit of groundbait through the feeder. Travel light as walk to the end is long plus 1 stile, 1 gate and a really uncomfortable iron bridge over a tiny feeder stream. Croy swim looked like it had loads of potential but could not decide how to fish it - too many options.
Lovely quiet beat with the far bank covered in glorious woods in places. 3 mewing buzzards overhead most of the day. Saw one walker and a couple of canoeists.

Four fish over 2lbs; one wetting. Fallen tree near top end needed some deep wading to negotiate. Lovely water but very slippery under foot! Out of interest no salmon seen or heard.

Another unbelievable day at one of our favourite beats. The fish are a lot more cagey at this time of year and it was a struggle to hold them for any amount of time. We both had the centrepins screaming on one occasion which was something to remember!!
Fish caught from different areas on the beat.
