Cloudy and cold day. After the feast of fish on the Usk's Dinas Beat the day before, this was definitely a famine. A friend was fishing the Lower Crai on the same day and both of us had the same result.....no fish and, apart from one solitary March Brown, no fly life seen.

Quality not quantity. Two beautiful trout - about 14" long. Both taken on point, the first on a small beaded nymph #16 and the second a March Brown nymph #14. Colder than the previous day, with no signs whatsoever of insect life or fish rising on an overcast day with the East wind still fairly strong.
Both fish in good condition and put up a lengthy fight.

The river was in beautiful condition with a good level and colour. No sign of any trout all day with very little hatching and nothing at all rising but a steady stream of small oos grayling falling to various nymphs made the day an enjoyable one.
A new fence has been erected to keep the cattle away from the river but a lack of styles does make some swims a little difficult to access. That said this is a lovely beat and a wonderfull place to fish.

Grabbed a couple of hours and fished the home waters from 11.15 until 2.30 today. Bright sunshine and a keen easterly. Grannom coming off at arrival and understood that they had been doing so since 10.30 (and was also told that yesterday it was 9.30.!) When I fished the beat last Sunday it was a monster (I was eating them!) but brief hatch at 12.30.! The fish were obliging then, and again today with two fish on a Grannom pupa parachute, four on a Grannom adult F fly pattern and two on a March Brown emerger. There was also a brief but significant MB hatch at about midday, which the fish amazingly seemed not to switch on to. Saw much the same happen down the Usk yesterday when the day before they went ballistic and enthusiastically took March Brown Duck's duns for an hour or so. All very curious!

9 x trout 10-15 inches, 7 x out of season grayling 12-16 inches, Deer Hair Emerger. The upper Wye seems to be waking up a bit at last. A very chilly start today, bright with an upstream wind, the water very clear and at 1 foot 2 inches on Llanstephan gauge. A few casts on the main lies with the salmon rod without result, then fished until 2.30 with the trout rod. Fish were reacting at times to sparse hatches of the expected three species: some grannom, some large dark olives and a very few March browns. No extensive or general rises while I was there and unfortunately the out of season grayling were very much still in the picture.
