Beat:Lower Carrots & Luggsmouth
Fishing:Coarse
No. of Anglers:2
First time on this beat, once onsite access to the banks is excellent throughout the entire stretch, with stunning surrounding scenery.
We focused our efforts on the lower stretch, and with the river looking in perfect condition we were expecting a successful day, however the fish were difficult to locate in any numbers, the barbel we did catch all fell to pellet feeder & meat and were in perfect condition with the best weighing 81b 10oz.
Having visited 4 different beats throughout this week it would appear that the barbel are not shoaled up in any numbers and that recent variable weather conditions have contributed to the fishing being somewhat more challenging than usual, roving techniques are a must.
We will definitley be returning to this stretch.

What a disastrous day.... It started off well. When we arrived the river as at a nice height and little colour. We each caught 5 trout in the same 15 minutes. Then..... The river rose by 18 inches in half an hour. I was in the middle and couldn't believe how quickly the conditions changed. It became very dangerous and not fishable - and the water turned to tomato soup! I exited the river as fast as I could. We did stay in the hope the water would fall towards the end of the afternoon. It didn't much and not enough to attempt to fish.

On arrival the water wasn't that high but was very coloured from overnight rain, water visibility was about 18 inches. It did clear a little more during the day though. The weather was very changeable as was the wind strength, one moment bright sunshine the next a heavy shower. Made my way up to about the midway point, caught two brown trout on weighted nymph. Lost a grayling and three other trout too.
Saw one good fish rise and tried dry fly for a while but the heavens opened up and I switched back to nymphs. Overall a difficult day on a lovely beat, thankfully I've fished this one before so I didn't mind wading in the coloured water.
Thus ends my first trout season, I've enjoyed it so much and all thanks to the WUF giving me the opportunity to fish so many amazing waters.

River pushing through and up slightly. Very few swims at this venue and difficult to get down to river. Fished from about 8.30 until dusk. Started slowly and improved during the day. Alan caught 10 barbel, Dave 6 and Pete 5 (10lb 12oz PB for the Wye). Chub up to 41/2 lb. Caught on pellet and meat.

The weather conditions were very windy with waves coming up the river, the 2 Barbel were in the 5 to 6lb range, with the chub at around 4lb, all taken on feeder tactics. Please note that the path down to the beat from the car park is heavily overgrown and very difficult to walk on. The willow tree at the bottom of the path has several bows broken, I would avoid standing / fishing near to it in high winds until something is done about it.

Nice stretch of the Wye and and an enjoyable days fishing. Swims on this stretch are quite limited as there don't seem to be any official swims and the banks are steep. There were quite a few anglers fishing on the opposite bank but this did not effect my fishing.
