Clear water running at an average height at just 4 degs. Hard frost meant it was pretty cool all day. No fish seen or caught, but a pleasure to return to this lovely stretch of water. Had a great day

To fish the beat without Mick would be like eating cheese without the biscuits, bread without the jam. A fabulous day, water a bit high and far too cold but expected a pull in every pool thanks to Micks guidance.Thank you again.

What a great day! One fish caught does not do the day justice. On a couple of spiders hooked a big fish, after several leaps and tearing about the water, I managed to get get it close to the net at which time it shook itself free and I lost the flies it a tree. Not sure what the fish was, my guess is a small salmon or the most energetic 3 Lb grayling. It was not a brown trout.
Later the flies were piling off the water and rising fish were concentrated in a run below the bridge. My size 15 JT olive was ignored. Massive frustration and a sulk ensued. Cast after, cast but not a fish.
Above the bridge in the shade, after the fabulous looking salmon pools a few dimples gave the game away. On with a size 18 emerger, BOOM!! Covered a riser, hooked up, massive air, gone. Same formula, shaken off. Same formula more air, gone. Same, played this fish harder and lower, got it in the net. Beautiful fish!
What a day, brilliant!
WUF Note: Grayling are not present in the Usk.

This was my (and my brothers) first visit to this beat. It really is a very pleasant place to fish. Contrary to information provided the lower end of the beat produced most action and rising trout. I lost two fish to a beaded nymph early on and rose a fish to deer hair emerger but did not connect. My brother managed, as I did, to spook a few fish but both of us not landing anything did not stop us having a very pleasing day. We should have stuck to our -not before april rule- but the draw of the river was too much. Some grannom and smallish olives were hatching but not in huge numbers...not yet.
