Absolute waste of time. Nature seems to be a few weeks behind this year. No hatch, no fish sighted and river still VERY cold. Will be leaving it for 3 weeks or so now.

We popped up here for the late afternoon and evening after enjoying some March brown sport on the Usk. Bright and still for the most part, but encouraged by fish rising to hatching midgies all over the lake into the evening. We can guarantee that there are PLENTY of fish in here and they seem to be a good average size too - we managed 3 between us and as many let go - all around the pound - which isn't bad given the conditions.

Just the beginnings of Spring! A bright sunny and warm day. The river was very full and cold. Lots of bank erosion made access and back-casting tricky and wading a bit dangerous due to the volume of water. Quite breezy to start with but the wind died down as the afternoon progressed to a beautifully settled afternoon/evening. Saw two fish rise on the late walk back to Abergavenny at dusk but otherwise no rise at all and only 1 or 2 March Browns making an appearance mid afternoon. Nonetheless, despite tricky conditions fishing small-ish bead-headed pheasant tale nymphs I connected with 2 trout. The larger of the two I got to my feet before he got off (barbless hooks and early season rustiness on the part of the angler!) What I saw of it though was an absolutely stunning fish of about a pound and beautifully pale golden colour. Otherwise a quiet day but it's whet my appetite for the coming season!

One of those early season days when a cold night and a river full of cold rain water kept the fish in their winter hideaways. A few small olives and a very brief flurry of March Browns wasn't enough to get them moving. Nothing caught this time, but time on the water is always a better classroom than reading articles in the fishing mags that make it sound so easy.

2ft 3" 4ft vis and dropping very slowly. Warmish sunny afternoon with a few LDO's and Grannom on the wing. Had time to trawl a monkey through likely spots in Bridge, Gravel catch and Rock to no avail. Don't like fishing sunk line, often find myself feeling it isn't deep enough over the lies and then it inevitably hangs up on the inside. Oh for a few weeks time when the sink-tips and size 8's can come out.
Left river when water levels inside waders had equalised with the water level on the outside them!

The brook was running high and fast, but only coloured not muddy. Saw the odd fly until 1.30, when a short cold and vicious hailstorm descended. Sunny after that, but no flies appeared and nothing rising. However, pleased to land 3 X 9" trout on gold head nymphs, from the bits of slacker water around. First trout of the season, but finished knackered after wading against the flow for 5 hours - just have to keep fit...
