Beat:Honddu Lower Henllan

Fishing:All Species (in season)

No fish seen rising, tried olive para and goldhead nymph with no success. It was quite a chilly spring day with a stiff cold breeze which was probably keeping the fish down, water had a slight tinge of colour to it. No fish caught.

River water abt 1'1", colour clearing, 45F. Canoes busy from 10:30-12:00 otherwise quiet. No fish seen or felt. Overgrowen steep clay banks made getting out of some of the pools difficult. Some nice fly water.

Beat:Fenni Fach

Fishing:Trout (River)

Fenni Fach is a stunning beat with some treacherous wading in the upper section in particular. I took an early dip just a few minutes into the start of my day! I had favourable conditions and there was a decent hatch in the first part of the afternoon but, sadly, no BT either to the nymph or dry fly.

Good conditions, overcast and relatively warm. No trout seen at all, very cold water, assuming too early in the season. Some lovely little pools and glides though, so will be back later in the season. May/June?

Nice days fishing. No salmon seen or caught, plenty of action on the trout rod fishing tungsten nymphs with hairs ear nymphs on dropper catching 10 decent Grayling & 5 brown trout. My mate changed from his salmon rod to trout and caught trout and grayling also on nymphs. Water was very clear, those rocks are very slippery.

Two trout seen in the deeper pools, none risen or caught. Decent hatch of March Browns about 2 o'clock and some Iron Blues but no fish seen rising to them. Pheasant tail nymph, and dry March Brown. Still quite a flow on, even though river level was low. Returned to the car park about 3.30pm and even though this was a pre-booked beat, found a passport holder was also fishing the same beat behind us. We were going to start again on some of the lower pools, but gave it a miss, as they were already fishing.

WUF note: If any angler who has pre-booked a beat encounters this, please log the car registration and ID Card number on the vehicle pass which should be displayed clearly on the dashboard enabling us to contact the offender and advise them of the rules.

Glorious day to be on the river. First time on this beat and I'll confess I was disappointed. While there were a few accessible runs and riffles, in general the access down to the river was very poor. While this is mentioned in the beat description, it is not adequately described. I grew up fishing the Monnow further upstream so am familiar with the river and type of fishing. Many sections here are slow and canal-like. The stile at the first hedge upstream from parking is also in very poor repair. If I was a coarse fisherman, I'd be happier with this beat. No surface activity and only a light hatch. The Skenfrith beat upstream is much better.

Fished the Taff today. Plenty of ldo's and brook dunns on the water to feed on so fished a quilled emerger. Managed to catch fish up to 2 1/2lb.
