Strength of steamy trouting water around the island was too tricky to wade, but would be very attractive at somewhat lower levels. While there, between 1 and 4pm there was surprisingly little fly life. However a salmon had a snatch at my fly, and remained tantalising active. Lovely sunny, gently breezy day. (Note that the "white gate"is no more, so newcomers need to look for the short steep path with steps that can be found in the hedge just beyond Glan y Cafn house)

Fished the stretch by Quakers Yard Railway Station. Fished spinner, lures and worm. Not a nibble all evening I'm afraid!

After a very early start arrived to find river at perfect height (0.82 m and falling) but carrying a little too much colour at first. We all fished hard with the double handlers on Rock Upper Rock and below the bridge but no sign so Salmo Salar. Mixed Ephemera hatched including Yellow May Duns but only 1 or 2 risers. Still an enjoyable day In beautiful surroundings and good company. Left reluctantly with the river looking spot on.

A brilliant evening session. 7 very nice trout, up to 2.5lb. A good number of pound plus fish. Possibly the best stillwater fishery for wild trout in Wales.

Great day on the Edw again. Water still a bit colored from the rain but fish where feeding. Only fished about half the beat.

Only fished a couple of hours in the evening (half of the beat). Plenty of small trout with the occasional trout to 12 inch. Nice otter is living on this beat. Otter was surprised someone else was fishing the pool :-)

Beat:Penpont

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Decided to fish Penpont for the first time today, as I thought that the club beats above Abergavenny might be off limits following the recent heavy rain off the Black Mountains. What a truly stunning beat this is - just turning a few stones shows how the beat feeds its reputed “Porkers”. Shrimp, cased and caseless caddis, mini-caddis, and Heptagenid Heaven. An invertebrate McDonalds! On arrival at 8 a.m. there were midge, olives and lots of Olive Uprights (at last!!) already on the wing, and fish rising, which they kept doing until the various hatches finished at about 1.30 p.m. when the forecast wind got up as well. After that, there were a few solitary risers but brunch was over for sure! I had eighteen fish with the majority surprisingly of 14-16 inches, generally 1.5-2lb, of Penpont fatties, plus a lovely 18” fish of 2.5lb. All the fish were off the top with most taken on an Olive Upright Duck’s Dun, and the rest on a hare’s ear emerger and an olive Jingler. Given the numbers of upwings, there must be an evening spinner fall well-worth fishing for here at this time of year, but today I had to go. Also saw quite a lot of mayfly so, if you come to fish this beat over the coming month, bring some mayfly patterns as well. I must fish on Friday the 13th again! I’ll be back.

Area:Lugg & Arrow

Beat:Court of Noke

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Managed a couple of hours late afternoon. Cannot believe half way through May and this is 1st time I have been out.
Arrow was quite high and coloured and this beat has changed a lot from last season. Some very deep holes have appeared.
A lot of fly life - including mayfly, but very few fish rising.
Lost a good trout and had several small splashy grayling.
Stuck with dry fly - but probably should have tried nymph as well.
