It is a joy to see that the riparian owners of this beat are putting in some bankside effort for coarse anglers. Hats off to the waterkeeper/gamekeeper for all the good work he has done there.
Fishing was a bit slow at first despite good flow for the summer. Things improved when the was some cloud cover towards the afternoon. All fish taken on swimfeeder pellet.

Day one of our 5 day trip found the river low and clear with an unseasonably cold wind blowing. Fish were difficult to catch but a few were tempted by various pellets and boilies in the field downstream of the wood.

River low, long walk but worth it. Method: swim feeder with pellet or meat and rolling meat. Biggest Barbel 9LB 4OZ
Biggest Chub 6LB 7OZ - what a cracker. Most of Chub in 4LB - 5LB bracket, all in excellent condition.

River now very low and showing its bones. Jungle warfare approach flicking dry elk hair caddis into likely runs brought the trout. Splashy rises toward the end of the beat in faster run brought the small grayling to CDC emergers. Tough going but nice to be out for a couple of hours in the evening.

Oh - what could have been! My final hour from 7.30 saw the river come to life with an evening hatch - during this time I caught 2 x 14 inch trout in the upper section of the beat rising near the far bank to take a CDC olive - what I would have given for it to have been like that all day.
The morning and most of the afternoon was cold and very windy; so much so I retreated to the comfort of the car for a couple of hours. The only highlight of the lower beat was seeing an otter swim straight towards me in the section of water above the fishing hut - now there's someone who can fish!

Promising conditions with air temperature low and cloud cover for most of the day but no interest from the salmon. One shad caught and a few others in evidence. A few resident salmon were seen in the Vanstone and the Dog Hole.
Anglers planning to visit the Wye from east of the Severn should note that Gloucester bridge is closed for road works and the diversion takes you up to the M50 at Tewkesbury.

A magnificent well managed fishery with lots of excellent swims. For the whole of the morning and part of the afternoon it was all chub, the barbel never had a look in, they were even taking baits on the drop. But early afternoon they seemed to have had enough and then at last the barbel moved in, we only caught 3, but lost at least 4. The barbel were estimated at between 5 and 9lbs, the chub weighed between 2 and 4lbs 8oz, bait used was red pellet and sweetcorn.
A special vote of thanks to Colin Richardson, who did a great job in putting us on the fish, his wisdom and knowledge of the river is second to none.

Into fish at the same time multiple times throughout the day and both into double headers at the same time. On the side of caution, 20 grayling and 15 trout, but it was probably double that…
