Conditions were good, saw a few trout throughout the beat but were easily spooked. Mayfly hatch around lunch time got trout moving and that was when I was able to match the hatch and bring one to the net of around 10 inches.

Two trout, one good sized to a Ptn under a Caddis and another to a dry March Brown, this being brought to the net during an intense but very short lived hatch of March Browns followed by the most voracious feeding, 15 mins ? Great to witness this for the first time! Not so great though for JH who still had a duo on and then tied on a silver sedge in the rush, all over by another change.

great conditions today with plenty of fly on the water, midge, ldo, march brown but the only rises spotted were grayling in the streamy water. the three trout to hand and the 22 grayling all took tungsten bead nymph on the point of a team of flies with unweighted nymphs on droppers. All grayling healthy ranging from 10-19 inches . water conditions were perfect for nymphing. Was amazed at the lack of activity from the trout

The water was running clear slightly above normal level @ 0.31 there were a few fish rising taking dark olives. We fished dry fly and weighted nymphs. The 2 fish were brown trout 1LB 6OZ and 1LB 2oz caught on pheasant tail nymphs.
Excellent water, 1st time on the Usk and really enjoyed it. Would definitely go again.

I’d stayed overnight locally full of enthusiasm for the new season and flushed with some unexpected success on the Kington wild stream beat the previous afternoon. So, it was somewhat disconcerting watching it snow as I ate my breakfast. Overnight rain meant that the river was still pushing through strongly and coloured, certainly fishable but I regretted leaving my wading staff at home. As the day wore on the sun came out and eventually there was a sparse hatch of Olives but no response from the fish (wish I could identify the small, dull coloured bird that was acrobatically taking the Olives in flight). I tried GRHE, PTN, Kite’s Imperial and an Adams all to no avail. Finally facing up to the prospect of total failure I fished an Elk Hair Caddis above a size 16 Hare’s Ear nymph very slowly in the pool below the old mill. It’s amazing how one fish can transform your day. A beautiful 12” trout took the nymph and came to the net - Happy.

An excellent day, albeit a cold morning with consistent light rain. Temperatures rose nicely though, and from 12:00-14:00, a fantastic hatch of LDOs were enjoyed and two beautiful trout of 2lb and 2.5lb were landed and returned. 13:00 was the best of the action.

Beautiful location. River was coloured and pushing through. Sparse hatch of Olives in the middle of the day, but too chilly for any real activity. No fish caught.
