Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:4

Fishing for salmon using lures (flies) and 2 small trout caught and released. 1 good sized salmon (guess 13-15lb based on sight of fish jumping) hooked and played for approximately 10 minutes on heavy spindle fly but lost when hook came out. Suspicion of a second salmon hitting line a couple of minutes later on heavy black, tube fly but on only for a few seconds.

Day 4 of 4 day trip and what a difference a few degrees on the thermometer will make! The river was rammed with fish and I would estimate I missed as many as I caught. Fish were not huge being mostly in the 6" to 8" range although there were two caught that were notably larger. What a fun day a great way to finish a fantastic 4 day trip fishing @WUFoundation beats. A mention too for St Marys B&B in Hay for a nice, comfortable room with breakfast.

Arrived 9.30am cold ,overcast very windy started at down stream limit with duo set up 3rd cast wbt to sight fly, followed by others missing the fly! Changed to a dry fly. River quite cloudy and did clear as the day progressed however the wind increased, middle to top not fished due to upstream waves! Found fish rising to bo/bwo hatching midday, last fish 14ins grayling all others trout 5--8ins, all fish returned. Will try again when less windy!

Tough conditions for a lot of the day (gust downstream wind) but still a very good day on the river. 9 trout netted, 6 on dry fly and the others to upstream spiders. Watched some otters playing and 2 herons which made fishing difficult in some pools but still nice to see.

Fished this beat a few days earlier. What a difference today. Water clear and a perfect height, steady mixed hatch all day and fish popping up in every pool and likely lie.
Landed 22 x wbt, 4 around 10", the rest 5"-8". Experimented with lots of different dries, everything in the olive, cdc and Adams category on a size 16 hook worked.
This is as good small stream fishing gets anywhere in the world. And on your doorstep for a tenner! Magical day, thank you WUF!

Weather report suggested that we would be rained off but with some excellent advice from Allison, we kept an eye on the river levels (http://www.gaugemap.co.uk/) the river dropped over night to a fishable level (below 700mm).
Day was overcast, and very little fly life was seen. No fish were rising. 1 small Brown caught & 1 Lost, near the old Church on hare’s ear nymph.
Nice stretch of river lots of different conditions - though wading difficult in a lot of area due to water level. We would return again later in the summer.
