River at 0.3 on the Brecon gauge, wet windy morning, strong downstream gusts, olives coming off in the morning up till around 2pm. A few rising fish seen, 7 trout caught on klink and dink all released, best around 12 inches.
Saw an Otter on the bank behind me.

7 Trout

An early season gem!! After 3 hrs of heavy rain up to 1pm I really did not expect such a good day, but the weather improved, the wind dropped slightly and with water .64m it looked reasonable for trout rather than salmon.
A few march browns coming down, but not much surface activity, so elected to go march brown spider on the point and egg laying grannom on dropper, subsurface on floating line. John fished similar patterns but two droppers.
I took 10 fish between 1.6lb and 4 oz, with 3 over 1lband two others around half pound. 8 fell to the point fly, and 2 on the grannom.All the larger fish taken on the point fly. 6 at woodstream, 4 at or below the rock.
For once, John Phillips only landed two small fish though he fished in more exposed parts where the gusting wind was more of a problem.
Weather is warming up and we saw the first yellow may dun, but march browns still predominant.John saw one salmon below the wires but too far down to reach with fly. None seen above bridge. Temperature went down to 8deg at 5.30 so retired----happy.

12 Trout

Went for the Brownies as so early in the season and tried various tactics but no sign of any fish. A few olives were coming off. Tried duo with a klink and bead head nymph underneath and larger Czech nymphs fished deep. Lovely river though and I have seen some nice fish rise on this river in the past. The cold wind probably didn't help.

As a novice to fly angling I had a nice afternoon paddling around this beautiful stretch of river, sadly no fish caught. The river was running beautifully with only the slightest tinge of colour, weather was sunny intervals but with a strong cold wind. I did see a couple of fish and one rise on my walk down to the start of the beat.
There was a very heavy shower of cold rain just before I arrived, not sure if it was this or my poor fishing that caused the blank.
First booking with the WUF and despite no fish thoroughly enjoyed it.

Four caught up to a pound and a half.

4 Trout

High wind (which changed direction frequently !) and driving rain was a little tricky at first, but when everything settled down we really started a terrific day. A couple of dense hatches brought fish to the surface, and we managed to tempt them with small upwinged dries, catching in both fast and slower water at the top of the beat below the Edw.
Small weighted nymphs proved more successful further downstream, and our total included 2 very good sized Grayling.
A wonderful beat, with varied water and good access, though the path leading upstream needs very careful negotiation, and once in the water a wading staff is a must.

13 Trout, 2 Grayling

Wadded up this beat no fish seen or even spooked,tell me WUF is their a stocking programme on these wild streams?if so fine, if not how can you endorse that 2 fish can be taken.also this beat is so neglected more than half of it is unfishable it made for a lousy day.

Chilly few hours with a little drizzle early on. Couldnt connect with the nymphs. Small hatch about 2.30 so switched to dry and caught a couple of grayling on a pale watery. be back when it warms up (hopefully later this week!!)

2 Grayling

What a stunning beat, first time here and enjoyed it immensely. Having spent all my time Salmon fishing, it's a day like this which remind me why I love trout fishing. Having said that I would love to Salmon fish this beat at some point later in the season. Hooking a Salmon here would be quite an experience, with the bedrock gutters and pocket water. Even the trout are difficult to handle. Hard fighting fish, beautiful dark red and brown in colour to match their surroundings.
However, it's been a strange trout season so far, due to the cold spring, the trout don't seem to have woken up yet, and why would they with cold water and few significant hatches to speak of. Not seen a March Brown this year, not even many Dark Olives which you would expect to really. Got caught in a massive Grannom Hatch at Chainbridge last week, but few fish rising to them.
Concentrated on the pocket water firstly with jig patterns and small heavy GRHE on the dropper under an indicator which produced a beautiful fish of 3/4 lb which fought really hard, taking to the air on numerous occasions. Czech Nymphing experts would love this beat.
A large otter showed up in the middle of the beat, had a look at us, entered the water to return with a fish, to show us how it was done! Took a fish on a dry, the Parachute Adams doing the business after many other patterns were ignored by the couple of fish which did feed on the surface.
Lovely lunch and a few beers in the Coach and Horses, so all in all a good day

3 Trout

Only fished for a brief hour in the mid-afternoon. Trout rising everywhere. All caught upstream casting using a size 12 klinkhammer and hares ear gold head on the tail. Floating line used. A 1 1/2 lbs sea trout landed from Bridge Pool earlier.
Lovely beat with easy wading on the whole.

20 Trout, 1 Sea Trout, 4 Grayling
