Arrived at midday, the river looked very nice, a little lower than on my previous visit. Watched the water for a while but saw no fish rising despite a few varied flies coming off. Found a few fish rising eventually and managed to take a small brown trout off the surface on a dry fly which is always nice. I was determined to fish a dry fly as fish were rising on and off during the day and I did miss a few takes but despite my best efforts no more fish were caught. I'm finding I tend to struggle a little on the bigger rivers so maybe some guiding would be helpful.

Warm and overcast day with the river running low. Started fishing at 0800 with very little fly life. Started with upstream nymphs fished deep that produced 2 small trout in the first 10 mins. A few grayling came to the net over the next couple of hrs then a hatch of yellow sally stoneflies got the fish looking up and they were pretty keen to take my pale olive emerger pattern. Fished till about 16:00 then called it a day. No fish of great size to mention predominantly from 8" to 15". Fantastic day.

Lovely afternoon and perfect conditions. Vanstone bouncing with fish, one grabbed the fly as I stripoed in but didn't hook up. Parking is now back in the correct place and makes this beat a pleasure to fish.

Some might find this strange but I'm not sure I fully enjoyed the fishing today. A personal competitiveness took over and I began to focus on the numbers rather than enjoying the process. I caught 17 fish on the bottom part of the beat and then drove on to the top part for the last part of the afternoon and caught 11 more. A mixed bag of sizes and nothing above 12". All caught on either an Adams Parachute or a Mayfly pattern.

A good many fish showing along the stretch, but particularly in Vanstone. Hooked a good fish in the Dog Hole, unfortunately the hook pulled after some 5 minutes, and then hooked another smaller fish by the Stones, which again the hook pulled. Very frustrating!

Slightly coloured salmon of about 15lb from Maddox at about 9.00 am on a Cascade. Fished till 6 pm, but no other takes. Saw a lot of fish in Vanstone and several of the upper pools - mostly a bit coloured, but the odd fresh looking one.
The access to the upper pools has vastly improved since I last fished this beat in 2013 - well done WUF!

This is the lowest I have seen Ty Newydd. Made it far less intimidating to traverse! Warm, cloudy day with plenty of flies hatching. Mainly upwings, some sedge and the odd yellow may. Didn't really get the fish rising though. Caught 4 wbt all 10"-12", two on nymphs and two on dries.
Several salmon making hefty splashes in the pool above the hut late afternoon. Wonderful sight. Need to review my tactics on the next visit.
