A tricky outing to the Wye (as expected) due to mainly sunny skies & the continuing low & clear water. The usual range of baits & techniques were tried throughout the day. Doing nothing significantly different, our perseverance was eventually rewarded in the last few hours, with the sky now more overcast & the light levels dropping We caught our target species on static baits from areas of deeper water. They were all between 6 - 8lbs & in excellent condition. Challenging & enjoyable as always

Last of a 3 day visit. Lovely and mild however river was very low. Again fished in deeper water and landed a few barbel to 10lbs 5oz. Really fat at this time of year. Stunning place to fish this time of year.

Beat:Irfon, Cammarch Hotel Lower Beat
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
6 x grayling 6-15 inches, 7 x out of season trout 6-11 inches, Sturdy's Fancy and Red Tag. Another low water day on the Irfon, fishing a pool gliding very slowly at funeral pace. For whatever reason, the grayling were being very difficult today, reluctant to rise and fooling with the fly. Apart from one shot, five good ones eventually made a mistake. Small unseasonable trout, on the other hand, were rising to almost anything. I had to leave at 3.30, but it's more than likely the grayling came on properly before the day ended.

First time on this beat and was delighted to find a really well looked after beat with plenty of swims. Dropped into a couple of swims but were struggling when the river keeper Colin arrived mid afternoon. He advised us where to fish, I was too lazy to move but my mate moved and was rewarded with a couple of barbel.
Colin is a really helpful and knowledgeable person and other beats could learn from the way he looks after his part of the river.

Beat:Abernant

It was time to dust off the centrepin and have a go at trotting maggots for the Grayling at Abernant. The river level was the lowest I have seen it here but the weather conditions were perfect and the Grayling were very keen with a fish first cast and the first hour very hectic. Sport slowed as I had caught most of the shoal but still managed to catch approximately 40 Grayling. I weighed one fish at 1lb 9ozs and had a couple of others about the same size but most fish were 8ozs to 1lb.

Area:Lugg & Arrow
Beat:The Leen
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
Not fished the Leen for a while and found it showing its ribs with the dry summer we have had. Found a pool near the hut where there was plenty of surface activity and caught two grayling on a light cahill. Avoiding drag was a problem so switched to a weighted red tag for another grayling. Had three more from another pool in the wooded area downstream of the weir. All fish were 10-12" and mainly cock fish. Some rain to lift the level by six inches or so would be most welcome.

Area:Middle Wye
Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8
Fishing:Coarse
No. of Anglers:2
The low clear river conditions along with a couple of otters for company at various parts of the day did little to help the chances of catching a few fish. Despite trying various baits, hook sizes and hook lengths all looked to be heading for a blank (except for a few minnows for a bit of sport) until a 4lb barbel took a liking to the garlic meat put on offer by my companion John towards the end of the day. Its a steep, tricky climb back up through the woods and thats in dry conditions, we have tried it before in wet conditions and with kit is quite dangerous and slippy. A few more rails to hold on to would not go a miss. A lovely beat though as far as getting away from it all goes, hardly a sound to be heard at times and surrounded by lovely countryside and woods.

Was to have been my last day for 'trelough' this season - could not get there as ill health once again flared up and required a doctors visit that day.
Can only look forward to 2016 when I hope to be able to put in some time at this lovely water.
Many thanks to wuf staff for their continued assistance.
