The river was very low and clear but with a bit of effort and some previous swim knowledge we managed to land 12 barbel to 9lb and 4 chub between the 2 of us. I also lost 2 good barbel. We had a great days fishing. The only disappointment was the amount of discarded fishing line and litter on some of the pegs. There was also evidence of camp fires. We cleared up what we could but on one particular peg, there was a large black bin bag in the trees full of beer cans and other rubbish. Those people responsible are a disgrace to the sport and ruin the river for other people. They do not deserve the privilege of fishing such a great river. If you are reading this, you people know who you are....disgrace!

Hot and sunny conditions. A good beat with varied water type. Productive for one angler (me!) but not for others.

A and son J today and they started on the first croy on the feeder catching 2 Chub early. After a long biteless period, they decided to move downstream opposite the Lugg mouth, hoping the faster water would produce. A caught nothing to add to his earlier fish but son J who we've decided would catch a Barbel in a cup of Tea got a late fish on pellet and a Chub on luncheon meat.
All in all I don't quite know what to make of this beat, we were a bit disappointed that we saw nobody over the four days that may have been able to give us some info on swims etc. On reflection I think we got the best out of this beat that we could, P certainly proved the float could produce.

Easy access and easy to find. Caught a whopper compared to what I normally get, around 18" and struggled to get it into my small landing net. It was caught on a pink gold head nymph size 18 on a new Zealand style rig. No fish rising but a lovely day as the fish I caught was in the morning.

Water very low and clear but not much boat traffic thank god! Caught all fish on pellet and groundbait feeder thoughout the day. Most barbel on small side (2/4lb) but best was 9lb 6oz. Chub to 4lb and 2 good sized eels, good to meet Don again - his help is second to none.

Clear sky and warm temps made for hard days fishing. One 2lb rainbow caught on sinking line and cats whisker. Relaxing and enjoyable day.

Bright sunny day. The occasional rise but dry fly fishing hard going. In the end a marabou lure fished down in the fast water got me 4 fish.

Beat:Fownhope 5

Fishing:All Species (in season)

September 2014: Beat maintenance work carried out and has now opened up the wooded section considerably. It can now be accessed from both sides although caution is advised as the going underfoot is challenging in a couple of places. For those slightly unsure on their feet, we advise to walk around the wood and approach from the other side. There are ropes in places and this has enabled the entire wooded area to be accessed. In low, summer conditions anglers can walk the entire length of the wood along the rivers edge providing unlimited fishing opportunities and swims. This is excellent barbel water.
Salmon anglers should also now consider this beat with 4 named salmon pools that will comfortably fish fly and spinner and excellent access throughout. Salmon seen jumping all day on 9th September 2014.
Please see the Beat Gallery on the website page for further information.

Beat:CATCH RETURNS

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Please would ALL anglers be reminded, it is part of our terms of booking to complete an online catch return or contact the office by telephone 01874 712074 with your report.
This is vitally important, not only to pass on information to other anglers about the beats before they book but it also allows us to keep an eye on the state of the banks and beat access also provides a good indication of the health of that area of river and it's fish stocks.
Persistent failure to submit catch returns may result in direct contact from the Foundation.
Thank you for your cooperation.
