A very cold and windy day, so difficult to cast successfully! We saw no fish, but enjoyed the scenery. A local dog walker told us that there is a brood of nine Goosander chicks upstream from the stone bridge at the first access point to the river....

A very windy day made for difficult conditions with little fly life showing. Having said that only 1 came to a nymph, the most successful fly - a size 14 black Klink. Best fish 18in with 2 at 16in.
The one that got away, a very big fish, after giving a right old run around dissapeared under the road bridge into the next beat, sorry about that.

Slightly coloured salmon of about 15lb from Maddox at 9.00 am on a Cascade. Fished in expectation till about 6 pm, but no other takes. Fish showed regularly at bottom of Vanstone and several of the upper pools - mostly a bit coloured, but a few looked fresh.
The access to the upper pools has been vastly improved since I last fished in 2013. A decent path all the way up, cleared entries and exits to the pools, and steps down the more hazardous banks - well done WUF and the (new?) keeper.

This is my third visit to this beat & on each occasion I have encountered groups of poachers using worm & spinners. I spoke to a local fly fisherman who said that this activity is ruining this stretch of the river as they are taking a lot of fish. Although there are warning signs against this type of fishing I've never seen a bailiff here in all the years I've fished here. This year it seems to be on the increase.
WUF Note: Please report any suspected illegal fishing to the Natural Resources Wales emergency line as soon as you can: 0800 80 70 60.

River at 1ft 6". Couple of hours after work. Water running out for the top half but as I was approaching the tail of the rock pool a broad back broke the surface in the prime taking lie. The anticipation as I swung a fly over it was immense! Worked the lie for 20 mins with various methods to no avail.
Water was perfect height for lower half so I went down and fought my way through the rocks and vegetation to get to the Neck of the Rectory. Down at the gap, there was a boil and a flash of silver as the fly was swept off the far bank. Couldn't get that one to come again so fished on and right in the aperture where the whole Wye rushes through a 5 yard wide gap the reel screamed into life. How they lie in that water amazes me. Great first run as it charged down into the pool below. When I saw it I thought it was the mother of all trout...but when it slid into the net it was a heavily spotted coloured hen salmon that was just under 10lb.
Decided to go back up and try the one that boiled again and sweet as a nut it nailed the fly. Better fish that for a while held station in the torrent for several minutes making me think it might have transferred the fly to a rock, no amount of pressure could move it but it eventually succumbed; 16lb of perfect Wye springer. Didn't cast again. Sated.
