Perfect water on upper Wye, so my wife and I got the children covered and treated ourselves to two nights away at the wonderful Llangoed hall which enabled convenient access for fishing this beat. I fished the upper beat (17 mins brisk walk to the top end) from dawn returning to the hall for breakfast having caught lots of trout but no Salmon seen. After breakfast we parked at the top end and both enjoyed a wonderful morning on Dol-meudy and Orchard etc. Fishing the Dolmido stone at 1'10" while watching my wife casting a fly down through the Orchard catching trout was one of the most picturesque fishing scenes of my life anywhere - just a stunningly beautiful stretch and enticing place to fish. Quick lunch at the "Wye not stop cafe" (excellent) and drive to lower end of the beat to fish the Pump house run and tricky Llangoed gutters in the afternoon. My wife walked back to the hall while I tried the intriguing gutters once more but nothing seen. We caught numerous trout but did not even see a Salmon which was a little disappointing as a few had been caught locally. In hind sight perhaps we might have tried a spinner in the deep Llangoed pool (a major deep hole) but enjoying the good water we did not carry a spinning rod along but would do so if fishing here again.
Many thanks to all for a wonderful few days fishing in Wales.

Despite a forecast of cloud this was an often bright day with a blustery downstream wind that made dry fly tactics difficult. Hatches were in any case sparse, with a few Yellow May Duns riding the current and swarms of gnats on the upper reaches in the morning, but these were largely ignored.
I got lucky towards the top with a strong trout lying in a nearside stream which took a grey shrimp and was adjudged better than a pound and a half. This was later trumped by a very strong fish on the island section on the middle reaches which took the trailing point fly when a small fish was in play on the dropper and simply whizzed down and across the pool in two bursts and broke me. After lunch one of the smaller pools below the first parking place produced two decent fish but I had little reward from my 'dances with bedrock' going down to the bottom pool. The middle reaches produced a little more sport in the early evening, including one decent trout which let go after a minute or so, but half of the catch today was tiddlers and it was a shame that with the benefit of the previous week's rain Fenni Fach did not have more conducive weather conditions to show more of this beautiful but challenging beat's potential.

Fishing for salmon using lures (flies) and 2 small trout caught and released. 1 good sized salmon (guess 13-15lb based on sight of fish jumping) hooked and played for approximately 10 minutes on heavy spindle fly but lost when hook came out. Suspicion of a second salmon hitting line a couple of minutes later on heavy black, tube fly but on only for a few seconds.
