Only one small pike to show for my efforts, nice to be back on the Wye though.

Fishing for pike & perch on dead-baits and lures. A number of swims tried, 1 pike to a lure around 9lbs. River level ok, condition good, could do with a touch of colour. Thanks to WUF for venues such as this one and for the booking system.

Late getting there and only fished for four hours. The grayling went to bed when the sun went down. Still,I had 16 grayling in the first three hours (and some small, out of season trout) trotting with a centrepin, first time this autumn. All returned. Grayling were of three different sizes with half-a-dozen between 35 and 40cms, i.e. over a pound. Average size seems to have improved since I last fished here. Autumn in the Wye valley - glorious. Should have remembered to wear thicker socks, the water was cold on the toes!

Beat:Monnow Valley

Fishing:Winter Grayling

2 x grayling, 13 inches, 2 x chub around 3.5 pounds, 2 x out of season trout 12 inches and 15 inches, long trotting. The river was rather more boisterous and rather more coloured than I had hoped, but a few bites came as it fined down after lunch. Every winter I get this idea that it would be nice to take a bag of grayling close to home. Living where I do, this means trying to locate them among other species on lower Wye beats, or on the Monnow. But on the Monnow, where they clearly have lived happily ever since Canon Eagles introduced them (there were some 6 inch grayling parr today), in recent years they have only turned up for me in ones and twos. Other species seem to dominate, even during the winter. Still, it was a good day out in a most beautiful valley.

Absolutely stunning surroundings, lovely stretch of water, but the fish didn't cooperate. We shall return. Note for the beat details - parking at the caravan site is not 'on a raised grass area' , but in a designated area next to the wooden building by the entrance gate leading to the river.

I can't get enough of the view downstream at Abernant, the fishing isn't bad either, although no chub were caught on this occasion. We long trotted maggots at varying depths, the river was carrying a little bit of extra water but running clear. The grayling were all in perfect condition, feeding well until the sun got off the water, when it was as if they just vanished. We saw this as our opportunity to call it a day and get on the road for a pint in the Seven Stars.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

I love this stretch. The Irfon was carrying a couple of inches but running clear, with a few leaves trundling along the river bed. The fish were in very good condition but lightly hooked. I'm sure I missed plenty of bites where the grayling just have that glancing snap at the fly. A small red tag on the point got their attention. Can't wait until next autumn!

One grayling and one trout caught on heavy nymph. River high so only possible to fish the calmer runs. Little wind a bright sun made for a pleasant day on the water. Thank you WUF.

Just a few hours to attract the ladies on this beat, I thought I knew where and how. River fining down but still pushing through, deceptively sometimes! A cold day with sun on the hills, only there I may add. No catch to report.
