The steep banks and recent rain made access to the top end of the beat pretty difficult, although we were clearly informed of this in the description of the beat. Saw a number of salmon jumping but unfortunately failed to tempt a take. Lots of coarse anglers fishing statically in the middle of the beat, so was unable to fish there sadly.

The rain arrived earlier than forecast so we spent long periods cowering under the brollies. River still low. A slightly tougher day than normal but still a pleasure and we managed to catch a few. Most Barbel caught wading / touch ledgering, which I really enjoyed, although the practicalities of netting them whilst most of your body is under water were challenging.

Then the furry poacher, and finally later in the morning a long stream of bubbles crossed the pool I was fishing.

Well what a baptism of fire, my first ever salmon fishing trip and I had a 6oz brown trout on a spinner, and then whilst fishing one of the deeper runs, I latched into my first experience of a salmon! I have trout fished for some 20 years and always fancied giving it a go, some may say that spinning isn't the way to catch a salmon but WOW it hit it like rocket and was on for a good minute before it pulled free. Despite not landing the fish it made my day that I hooked on at least!

I saw plenty of fishing hitting fry and possible salmon parr all over the deep pools, I stayed until 8pm but I did not see anything of a rise, not sure if the the wind hindered the chance of a rise, there was plenty of fly life just not much moving. Saw some cracking brownies moving in the shallows over the deeper water at a couple of pound each at least.

I have to say the details that have been written by the owner? Or a very knowledgable fisherman are fantastic give you a great picture of the river and tactics on how to fish! Fantastic place very beautiful and I will be back :-)

Very low water and gin clear. Plenty of fish about but easy to spook. Would like to have made longer casts so as not to spook them but this is impossible due to too many overhanging trees. The beat could do with a bit of a trim this winter!
Both trout caught were between 10 & 12 inches and came from deep pools on a heavily weighted nymph.

Fished the lower end from the 2nd parking spot, what a stunning stretch of river!
They say the Usk fishes best in the spring though I could probably have done better without my reel going in to center-pin mode! Never the less, an enjoyable few hours on the river. One wbt 8ins another lost at hand. Thanks always WUF.
