What a tough day! Just a few taps and no full on bites. I think (or hope) that it was the water temperature drop over night that put the fish off and not me being incompetent! It was certainly a whole different story to last week. Either way, I’ll be back out on the Wye next week…

Hard fishing today. Caught a barbel on pellet feeder early afternoon or so. Then fished in the woods for a few hours but couldn’t get a bite. Back to the first swim at the bottom of the field for the evening stint, and picked up 2 chub and a nice roach. No barbel though which felt surprising as conditions seemed perfect and had caught the evening before (on a different stretch). Maybe the colder nights have switched them off a little.

Used 11’ 3wt trout spey rod and weighted nymph on the point in gravel catch and bridge pools. No takers. Moved up to the Flats and again no interest. Some rising fish just up stream of the bridge. Switched to lighter nymphs and began to get decent pulls. 9” trout came from close to surface.
Last hour in the mill pool with 5 wt rod . Fish rising at distance here, just about in range with a good cast and very short drift. Hooked one riser but he was on and off quickly.

fished from 10.00 till 1.30 no risers seen, so nymph and spider set up. Caught one 11 inches, lost another decent fish which shot behind a boulder, missed one more, lovely few hrs, great fun. Seemed to go quiet when the sun came out my only other excuse is that I'm not good enough .
