Cold 10c, river quite high and coloured. Lost one grayling to a nymph. No surface action. Later on the campsite I was staying on in Llanthony a major mayfly hatch

0.17m on the gauge, however, still with a bit of pace and colour . Managed 5 small trout, all on caddis. Even though many upwings and mayfly about there was very little rising, so my fall back position is always a caddis.

First time fishing this river so I wasn't sure what to expect. I used an 8 footer but a 6/7 footer would've been better as it's mostly fishing in tight spots. The river was running low & clear and it looked like it needed a bit more water to bring some of the pools to life and add a bit of depth to the runs. Hardly any risers though it was morning and cooler than recent weeks. Not much in the way of fly life. The bits I could fish I had four and lost one. 3 were on a nymph including 2 x cracking 14" fish.
The ones I caught were all d/s of the farm where the access is much trickier.

An interesting session and glad I went down.

Absolutely awesome day. Quietened down towards the end of the day but a great days fishing was had.

One shad landed and another dropped off on a spinner, great beat lots of decent swims, no salmon seen, lot of mayfly hatching but weirdly no trout or chub active.
