Parachute Adams dry fly. Trout holding in deep pools and rising mostly in the afternoon. Some trout were in 12 to 18 inch deep riffles. My guide was Oliver Burch. Great guide and teacher! Wonderful day on the Usk!!!

Plenty of fish rising but struggled for takes, finally got one on a small black gnat. Lovely day.

Lovely small brownies in perfect condition. Access to the top third of the beat is limited due to new fencing.

Only fished a few hours in the afternoon. Despite the level only sitting at 1’3” on the gauge, the river was carrying a lot of colour and only just worth fishing with a salmon fly. Shad are still a bit of a nuisance.

Fished for few hours in the evening. Nice to see so many insects on the water but although trout were rising frequently, I couldn’t work out what they were taking. One trout on a tiny CDC dry, then three more after changing to a team of wets. Two decent fish of just over a pound and all took a snipe and purple.

Enjoyable day on the river despite very coloured water and no realistic prospect of a salmon. 1.4m at Lydbrook after a week of rain. Stunning scenery, generally very easy wading on the pools marked as fly water, plenty of water to explore, only saw 1 canoe all day. Incredible mayfly and olive hatch for trout anglers!

The lower section is really just for spinning as high banks (6’ plus in places) and very deep water right off the bank with heavy brambles right to the waterline. Good for fly from top of beat and I could see more water would open up in lower flows.

1 trout of 10’ took a 1.5” cascade tube!
