This is a lovely beat in a beautiful setting in the heart of rural mid-Wales. There were three of us fishing the beat but it was hard going in the very low and clear water conditions. We have had a very dry February. We only managed to catch 8 grayling and they were small with the biggest fish only weighing about 12oz. Four were taken trotting red maggots in the morning and four were taken on the fly in the afternoon (3 on a size 14 Usk Nailer and 1 on a size 16 Griffith's Gnat). There was a brief and sparse hatch of large dark olives in the early afternoon but the fish were not actively rising to them. We also caught quite a few out-of-season brown trout. The birdlife was good too; so ideal for any angler who is also a keen ornithologist.

Lovely day on the river.

I managed 2 Grayling, both on nymph under indicator.
My compadre did better (as he always does!) netting 7 grayling and 1 oos Brownie. All but two under indicator, the others euronymphing.

River really low for time of year... need some sustained rain or summer's not looking pretty!

Roll on trout season :)

Well first session out really since the move to Rhayader ... now bang in the thick of some awesome fly fishing for wild brownies, from all the reservoirs and mountain llyns to the feeder streams and of course the proximity of a lot of the wild streams ...

I did a recce of the Llanidloes stretch of the Upper Severn a couple of days ago , concerning levels for February and to be honest the Ithon wasn't any better !!!! Low and running clear, but on a fairly decent section , managed three shots , one after another pretty much, all feisty for their five inches !! Nothing decent showing in the three hours I was there between ten and one ....

Three good constant days rain would be just the ticket .... its worrying for the start of the brownie season if I'm honest ... the Cambrian catchment streams should be pokey this time of year ...the Elan dams are all full , including Claerwen .... that's something I guess !! I'll head to one of my favourites on season start , see how the mop flops .... clients have been ringing me and emailing for river bookings which is nice but I fear with our " new" climate a mountain Llyn early bells may be the answer to some sport .... anyway on a high note , a lovely day , bit parky with the North wind , and nice to get some on the PTN , albeit tiny , cest la vie that's fishing hey ......

Beautiful beat in a brilliantly secluded part of the county. Water level was just right if a tad high, running cold and clear. Lots of runs to get stuck into and plenty of deep pools too that require skirting round the bank. Fish all took a black-hackled pink-bead nymph thingamajig suspended under a big floaty sedge, all from medium paced riffle/glide hybrid zones. Biggest grayling nudging 10” and just shy of that for the best of the out-of-season trout. Paid a visit to the eponymous abbey which is absolutely stunning and well worth a slow mooch around. A real hidden treasure. Stumbled upon (drove past) a beautiful cider shop too so stocked up on way home. Top notch. Cheers WUF.
