River had a reasonable flow although expect much lower levels presented easier wading than usual.
One nice big fish caught early on to F-fly from deep channel on lower part of beat. That promised a productive day’s fishing however it did not materialise. Gusty wind? Bright sunshine? Gin clear water? Poor skills? Who knows?

Theres been a bit of rain so river has had a bit of a flush through. Dropping back down again though. The day started as we parked up …. Two other anglers were peering off Llanstephan bridge so went and said hello, they were the rods on Gromain for the day. Was good to chat.
On walking down to the river we were greeted by 4 cormorants on the best pool followed by 3 goosanders – not a good start. There was a tricky downstream breeze, with little insect life and no visibly rising fish to be seen. Not a good omen. And fishing the usual glides brought no response. However it was a very different story in the faster water at the top of the beat. There was a significant head of 2 year old grayling in the 8 to 10 inch category willing to rise to a fly… and even a couple of this years 2 inchers joined in. Bigger fish and trout were largely absent although a couple did come to hand.
We finished with 39 fish to our parachute dries – not bad on a day that didn’t look promising initially. Best grayling 17”, best trout 18”.
Knotweed logged with Louis and the team for attention - and theres a large owl who always escorts us off the beat when we leaving in the evening, if it’s a tawny it’s the biggest I have ever seen!

Lovely stretch of river in an incredible setting.

Hard work to find the fish but once I did I caught consistently.

Constant trickle of feed seemed to work well.

Access to river was excellent with parking behind your swims.

My first visit to this stretch. I followed the instruction to contact the owner in the days prior to my booking, but received no reply or call back. I decided to concentrate on fishing the left bank and started on beats 4 and 5. the river was in good condition, but the bank was largely unfishable due to the overgrowth on beat 4 and much of beat 5 until the bends with the shallow banks and gravel beaches which might fish better with more water. One chub came on beat 5 fishing the channel under the opposite bank. I then thought I would take a look upstream at beats 1 and 2 staying with the left bank. The access point to beat 1 was inaccessible owing to road works. The access point at the pump house for beat 2 was unlocked and didn't look like anyone has used it for years. The bank was unfishable due to overgrowth. There was also no obvious place to park. I went back to beat 3 which by contrast was both accessible and very pleasant. I only had one other chub but there was much more activity late in the day. I will concentrate my effort on beat three next time. This beat needs work clearing vegetation to create a few more swims and improve access.

Warm bright day, river a little higher due to recent and much needed rain. Caught 3 grayling and 2 wbt off the top before lunch. Beautifully conditioned fish, 10" - 15", all taken with an F-fly and all returned safely. Fish completely switched off after lunch, but I stubbornly persevered with dries, for no other reason than this is the method I love. Great beat, look forward to returning next year.
