River 0.9m dropping slowly and surprisingly clear. A lovely day albeit with cool downstream wind making Speycasting quite challenging at first. We all improved as it dropped and close season rust reduced. A very social gathering although we fished quite hard. No trout or salmon showed and there was a moderate hatch of Grannom in the middle of the day. No Olives or March Browns. There has been a shift in the river bed on Upper Rock as described by owner Barry. This has resulted in less trip hazards and made wading in this spot easier. Beat scenic as ever and plenty of pleasing flywater.

Proper silver Wye Springer of 15lbs caught during an organised Sportfish tackle demo put on for 30 members of the Midland Fly Fishers on Thursday. Water looked perfect but sun very bright with strong upstream easterly wind. Got bored with casting a bit of wool so tied my favourite fly on to cover a known taking spot. The rest is history.

Fished from noon, and from them into early afternoon there were some flurries of March Brown. Caught three trout in that period, all to rising fish, two were beauties up to the 2lb mark. Fish all in beautiful condition, not a mark on them and had obviously been feeding well recently - very plump. Once the March Browns stopped it was much quieter, still got a couple of bites but the middle of the day was definitely feeding time! Beautiful on the river today, sunny conditions and many of the birds are back - lots of swallows, house and sand martins hawking over the river again, willow warblers singing on the banks and a couple fo green sandpiper too. Japanese knotweed is getting worse at both ends, beginning to spread - whacked some of that on my way through as well as the Himalyan balsam (but was careful not to take any splinters with me!)

A brighter day but still cooled by a horrid easterly wind. Very little hatching and no fish showing until a short hatch of march browns in the run-out of the pool below the house, which delivered three fish.
