7 Barbel, 2 Chub

Lost count of Chub caught, both on feeder and trotting. Water level very low but Chub fed all day. Most around 2lb some 3 and one 4lb. Spotted one small barbel but none caught.

Started the day at the top end of the fisherie and slowly moved to the lower end the river was low and with the humid conditions fishing was hard, eventually managed to land a Chub before packing up at the end of a hard but enjoyable day.

Late afternoon/evening session exploring the middle to top end of the beat (shallower sections). Free-lining tactics. Conditions mostly too sunny perhaps but clouded over with a spot of rain in the evening. Fish between 1 and 3lb. River looked in ok condition given all the recent doom and gloom, plenty of streamer weed and abundant wildlife

A couple of daytime visits to the Usk in the middle part of the month had been very tough going, making it feel like the dog days have arrived early this year. This very enjoyable evening session reinforced that, with the trout only really switching on from 9pm onwards, after which spinner patterns started to work. Many of the fish were relatively small (5"to 8") with a couple around the 1.5lb mark. The last one of the evening was 2.5lb, landed at 10.30pm.

Found a couple of spots that the barbel seemed to hold in. Lovely beat but the top half needs some attention and the swims from last year are now not accessible.
