This a beautiful stretch of the Irfon and very quiet and private. we could access most of the water but due to the previous night's rain we didn't risk crossing to access the top section as we couldn't see how deep it was. The river was very coloured with a milky appearance when we arrived and stayed like that all day. Visibility was about 50 - 60 cm. This was most likely due to rain the previous night but it did make the fishing difficult with very little fly life and hardly any rising fish. The fish we did catch all came to a weighted nymph with a sparkle band would around the body. It was easy to find and the directions to the water were very straight forward.

Best days river fishing of my life fishing Caradoc. Easy to find, great access, beautiful stretch of river. Fishing here for 2 days, We started down at the end of the stretch & quickly caught a small chub on meat, which was soon followed by a 3lb 12oz chub on feeder & pellet. We shared the stretch with 2 other friendly anglers who had travelled from Holland & one of them fished upstream of us & we noticed that he was regularly catching good fish on the feeder. He was joined by his fishing partner who then started to float fish the same swim & again was catching barbel constantly. Around mid-day they decided to move upstream & advised us to have a go in the swim & told me how they were catching them. I set up a float rod with 5g olivette and fished over-depth & coaxed a 12mm pellet down the swim and had the best session of my life catching quality chub & barbel to 6lb on the float. Ending up with 17 fish,11 chub & 6 barbel, (15 fish from this specific swim). Beautiful weather & friendly horses came for a drink and a visit. River extremely low, we were fishing on the river bed about 10 yards in from the natural bank. Many thanks to the Dutch anglers who graciously shared the swim & advised us on their tactics.

See other post fishing Caradoc - My mate had a good day catching 6 chub & 1 6lb+ barbel on meat & pellet hook baits using ledger tactics. With only the one swim really producing the goods, a great day on a very low & clear river.

The river was extremely low and there were features showing that had not been seen in decades. The banks needed a great deal of care to get down to land a fish. A long landing net handle is necessary. All of the fish were caught in the deeper water. The swim upstream of the fence is productive but a rope is a must in my opinion, if you are not keen on getting your feet wet.

3 Barbel, 7 Chub
