Didn’t see a single fish. Nothing. Very disappointing. Was chatting g to farmer who told me there are otters on this stretch of the stream so maybe this has made an impact on the fish. Also lost a lot of flies do to all the over hanging branches. This will only get worse as the leaves grow in though Spring.

A very bright day greeted me at this now truncated beat. I started on the flats upstream nymphing to no avail, closely watched by the sentry of the mill.
The river was quiet until 1 pm when a hatch bought fish to the surface, managed to bag a nice 1.5 lb trout on a dry , much to the joy of the spectator on the aqueduct. The rises soon stopped but I managed 3 more trout on MB spiders. Another typical spring day, was hoping the warmth may bring more sustained hatches and rises, but it wasn't to be.
Still it was a beautiful setting on a fantastic day.
All fish returned.

River at a perfect height and running gin-clear. Bright and sunny (14C) with a cold breeze from the east, which got stronger as the day went on. Teased a couple of small BT from the shallows at the top of the beat on PTN. Around mid-day a sporadic hatch of March Brown began, lasting about half an hour. Took one from the tail of the lower pool on a dry MB and missed three other takes. As the cold wind picked up, the action stopped. Called it a day around 15:00 hrs

I snuck away from work for an hour on the water and arrived at 10am in beautiful sunshine. Imagine my dismay when, after getting my waders on, I realised I'd forgotten my reel...
I didn't have time to go home and come back so improvised by looping a couple of furled leaders together and tying off on the reel seat. It worked, after a fashion, but meant I was fishing with limited range and had to use a heavy nymph to turn the line over. I ran the fly through most of the deeper pools and turned up one lovely trout about 9". A really great way to start the day.
Casting was definitely harder with my unorthodox set up, but some very gentle pruning of the odd overhanging branch would be very useful.
