Lovely day, light cloud and water at a good hight. Did not see any fish rising all day, despite a couple of decent hatches. Managed a couple of small trout towards the top of the beat and one of about 1.5lb in the middle part of beat. The last one looked like it had been attacked by something (see photo) a while back but seemed fine now. All in all a really nice day, thanks WUF.

Bright sun and a low, clear river early season equated to a tough few hours.
Deep nymphs, spiders, sakasa kebari - not a pull.

Hard to care when the sun is shining and you're stood in a river with a rod in your hand.

First time out this season and Abernant is a great place to be. I was optimistically targeting salmon, not with any great hope this early on, so I was surprised to get a strong take that stripped a yard or two off the reel before letting go. I wished I’d taken the trout rod with me as there a brief hatch around mid-day which resulted in some surface action from trout. Very reassuring to see that the owner is investing in bank-side maintenance and counter-erosion measures. River was running clear and at 1m on the Erwood gauge.

A most enjoyable day fishing as a birthday celebration for my old fishing friend, Dave. River was high and tinged with colour but looked good and 'fishy'. No sign of the trout though despite trying every tactic we could. Just 3 small grayling in the end. Fabulous to be back out on the river!
