Slow start, but found rising fish from around 11:00. Wind made it tricky but some great sport in the end with a couple of 2 lb'ers included. Most fish caught on dries - some on nymphs fished just beneath the surface

We don’t usually come this far up the catchment this early in the year but as it has been an early spring we made an exception. We wondered how we were going to avoid the out of season grayling that were prolific at Gromain the previous week – but we need not have worried!
There were a few flies coming off all day – Yellow May Duns and Blue Winged Olives – but only a few fish rose, and none in the usual prolific bottom pool. We didn’t cross over to fish the upper part of the beat today, but still managed to get 5 trout up to 14” to our dry flies. All safely returned….

Went down to the beat with confidence, beginning an evening fish just as the water levels were beginning to drop after the recent rain. May flies were hatching so I matched the colour with a dry yellow evening dun, size 14 and cast about the glides and got lucky. Plucked a nice one pounder out from under a tree and then got into a bigger one a few minutes later. I wasn't quite sure how to play a big river fish, as he was holding his ground and treading water, a rods length away from the net. My inexperience with larger fish shone through as I attempted to land him and he came off. One or two swear words later I recast and caught another (potentially the same) fish and brought him, with caution to my waiting net. He must have been 1.5lb, which for me, is a river record. Went home chuffed. Cracking beat.

Well a really adventurous day today .... a few hours up at the Lugg at Litton ... a bit low but from the off good solid takes to my Parachute Greenwells in the faster water !!! I did park up the offas Dyke side ... at about ten .. couple of hours on tricky water managed five from here and a few missed on my lovely Rawson 5'7" s glass 0 weight ..... soooooo delicate but sooooooooo much fun with tiny dries !!
Called it a day here at half twelve .... a good days down pour would be just the ticket; but its holding its water well , like the Arrow in fairness ....
Anyway , on my way back home I stopped off in town and had an hour and a half on the Lugg stretch there !!! Again great takes to my dry ... bumping my tally up to nine ... some of them lovely plump lugg fish of ten or twelve inches ..... one grayling too ... all in all a fun if not different few hours ... back to the Ponderosa and time too crank up the mower I guess .... morale is a least high after a cracking few hours and nine Lugg beauties to hand.... back here again soon !!!!

10 x trout 6-15 inches, Monnow Gosling. The word was that the mayfly is up on the top part of the Monnow. That being the case, perhaps an afternoon / evening trip would have been wise. However, all I had was a morning taken on the way home after staying overnight in Swansea, so I did my best. No fly was to be seen and precious few rises, but some handsome Monnow trout of all sizes were prepared to come up for a big (size 10) dry fly, so I'm sure they had been conditioned to mayfly in recent days. The stones were alive with insect life - I only wish it was like that lower down. One small grey drake put in an appearance as I was leaving at lunch-time.
