Bright sun and a low, clear river early season equated to a tough few hours.
Deep nymphs, spiders, sakasa kebari - not a pull.

Hard to care when the sun is shining and you're stood in a river with a rod in your hand.

First time out this season and Abernant is a great place to be. I was optimistically targeting salmon, not with any great hope this early on, so I was surprised to get a strong take that stripped a yard or two off the reel before letting go. I wished I’d taken the trout rod with me as there a brief hatch around mid-day which resulted in some surface action from trout. Very reassuring to see that the owner is investing in bank-side maintenance and counter-erosion measures. River was running clear and at 1m on the Erwood gauge.

A most enjoyable day fishing as a birthday celebration for my old fishing friend, Dave. River was high and tinged with colour but looked good and 'fishy'. No sign of the trout though despite trying every tactic we could. Just 3 small grayling in the end. Fabulous to be back out on the river!

Was a sunny day with strong winds but managed 1 fish on a team of flies, close to the bottom, where the stream enters the reservoir. No fish taken.

River low and clear, bright sun and an east wind all added up to a nil return for me. Nothing hatching either.

Tricky access at times, found good hatch of LDOs and March Browns on a sheltered corner and river came alive- rose and landed a few Usk beauties before getting over excited and having a series of off and ons- such is early season fishing even for a well seasoned angler
