Cold wind blowing hard downstream all day. River still low even after the rain the previous day. No bites in the morning at all but the fish came in the afternoon to a feeder. Fished two swims hard all day for 6 barbel and one chub lost to a snag tree. Biggest fish just over 8lb.
A rope and some form of rope anchor at the top of the bank would be advisable as it is a long way to the water.
Usual armada of boats and swimmers but hey ho, that is the wye these days. Still a very enjoyable day on the river.

Good water level, and even good colour, surprisingly, as rain was only the day before. There were a few hatches of blue olives and I saw a few yellow May duns.
The wind was the real problem. It howled downstream making casting near impossible. I use a heavy rod on the Wye, an 8 weight 2 hander with heavier line, but it was useless much of the time. In the few brief moments there wasn't a wind I caught 7 trout to 1 1/2 lb and lost one about the same size.
As in previous comments, I did not see a single salmon of any kind, no parr, no smolts,no grilse.... nothing. It's looking very much like the end of salmon fishing to me....

My first time on this beat, indeed my first time back on the Wye for a couple of seasons. What a wonderful place to fish. Peaceful, secluded and in beautiful surroundings, a total and welcome contrast to my usual urban existence. It’s not a place for the unfit though, the admittedly fairly short walk back up the path to the car at the end of the day with my tackle had me wondering how long my corpse might lie undiscovered!
I fished the first field, on a low and clear river and had four barbel to 8lb, and lost a fifth to a hook pull after playing it almost to the net. All of the fish were pristine, long, lean bars of gold, pretty as a picture in the sunshine and fell to very whittled down boilies, straight lead and PVA bags of mixed pellet.
I have to mention the swans, which were sometimes a nuisance in spite of my best efforts to move away from them - there were more swans on this beat than I’ve ever seen anywhere outside of a sanctuary. I gave up trying to count them when I got to 40. I did consider a move to the faster, shallower water at the top end, but my inherent laziness won out in the end.
All in all, a very enjoyable day on a splendid venue.

1 large barbel, 1 large Chubb and a small Chubb. Struggled for 1st half of the day fishing from the stone beach after the fast bend, lots of thick weed and lost tackle. Moved downstream and had 2 cracking fish on the feeder using halibut groundbait and meat. River running fast and rising after heavy rain upstream in Wales the previous day. Gorgeous setting, will certainly return.

River was high with some colour, the path along the bank is very overgrown in some places from Pen Rhiw to Hafrenna Brook.
