Unfortunately this morning at the last minute I discovered I have somewhere lost some crucial gear, so had to abandon the trip! Shame as it looks like the morning might have been nice on there, high-ish water, but nice. Sportfish order in process!

River still quite high, but clear and a beautiful spring day with a hatch of flies around mid day, which lifted the spirits in these difficult days.

Used floating and sinking lines with hares nymph, damsel lure, Montana and others but had no luck, probably my casting and lack of experience is the reason I blanked. Probably won't fish there again unless on a boat. Most of the bank is hard to get to and not much space behind to cast and lots of reed beds in most places.

Fantastic to be back on the river on such a lovely spring day, which proved to be the last before lockdown.
The river was carrying a lot of water, which was gin clear, this combined with the bright sunshine and keen easterly breeze prevented me from troubling the scorer today. There was a brief hatch of March browns and olives at about 1.30 but I saw no rises to them.
I saw beautiful wildlife however, including, kites, buzzards, heron, dippers and numerous wagtails. A wonderful place to be before the enforced pause to the season. The winter floods had led to several bank collapses and substantial shifts in gravel beds, no surprise really.
Note there was roadworks on the approach to the lay by making access difficult however I would think these will be long gone by the time we resume.

Two trout caught nymphing - there was a March Brown hatch but nothing rising. One of the trout was an absolute cracker of a brown trout coming in at probably around 3lb, brilliant stuff. Will be back when the water has warmed just a little and hopefully they’ll be more active!

Good to get out, first trip of new season for me. Bright and sunny, bitterly cold wind though, somehow managed to pickup 2 small trout 6>8inches and one nice size grayling around 15 inches, that was it struggled for the best part without another touch. All returned safely.
