Lovely day on the beat, challenging fishing all trout fell to dry flies over the day.
Beat is starting to have a neglected feel, a Few pools are unfishable Due to trees down and your up to you neck in nettles in a lot of places, just needs a little TLC to make the beat more enjoyable and easier access.

7 x trout 8-11 inches, Monnow Gosling. On a hot afternoon with the water so low, I didn't expect to do very well, but in fact a few of the larger trout (by the Lilliputian standards of this little stream) were prepared to rise to a big fly. Just the odd natural mayfly around.

An enjoyable day in the idyllic Arrow valley. Feeding fish hard to find and prospecting with nymph and dries did not produce. Maybe half a dozen places on the whole beat where I saw fish rising, mostly to very spasmodic mayfly in slow glides where a stealthy approach was difficult in the bright conditions and low water. There were swarms of mayfly dancing in the wooded area above the weir at the upstream end of the beat, no doubt on account of the silty section of water there and a few fish were rising below the weir to the ones washed over it. Stayed to last light in the hope of more evening activity, which wasn't significant and three missed takes to a mayfly was day's score. Otter spraint in a couple of places and a deceased crayfish found on the river bed.

Terrible algae bloom in river reminded me of pea soup. Not a bad height but the colour was simply awful. Packed up at 11.30

Well booked the lovely Hergest Court beat again, and after a long series of shifts , was nice to get up at half four do the morning admin jobs with the pets etc etc , then bimble of to the river . Only takes about thirty minutes , so was prompt at tackling up in the lay by at ten to six . . . Happy days !!

Mooched to the start of the beat , well nearly , as the very inquisitive heifers were wanting to know why I was in their field, so did a sharp exit into the river , let them calm down , and basically enjoyed the peace for ten minutes . . . Initially starting with a tiny size twenty , goldbead hares ear ,good solid takes and by half eight , before the sun had even burned through the muggy clouds , had ten fish , ranging from five to twelve inches , lovely condition Arrow fish as always !!!!

Really good fun this morning , olives showing in numbers around ten , and Mayflies putting in an appearance around eleven , I should imagine this evening would be cracking here , with some excellent mayfly sport !!! But the five hours was enough for me today, eighteen beauties to the net , and six not quite made it !!! Slippy barbless hooks today doooooooooh !!!!

Plenty of activity from the resident dippers and king Fisher up and down the shady river channel, lovely to see . Shall give one if the wild stream beats an early morning session in a couple of days . . . . A cracking few hours , spot on !!!!!!
