I caught no trout today and only saw a couple of rises in the 4 hours I was there. Very difficult day.

A slow start to the morning but action increased as the day warmed, which was very welcome after a very sparse session on The Irfon the previous day. Maybe 3 or 4 at 4”, then the rest up to a single 10” which was the last catch of the day on one of Hergest’s several deep pools. All fish to dry on a short 3WT. On the drive out I noted some heavy trimming at the start of the Aberedw beat and wonder if the whole beat has been cleared? From what I remember last year, it was due.

Should I? Shouldn’t I? Well, I did....an afternoon 3 hour session as the grass decided it can wait a bit longer to be cut at home. Walked the edge of the newly planted field of potatoes, with the furrows steering me to the very start of the beat. Hoping to find regularly rising fish, but they were less upwards looking initially, although plenty of mixed fly life about. First fish about 8 inches took the nymph and scrapped well, airborne most of the time. Thereafter, I alternated between dry 18 olive parachute which was greedily engulfed by the second of the day, and Klink and dink. Two others took nymph with remainder nailing the Klink. Long distance released 4 others. By the look of the shell (photo), the local otter has a job on its hands....looked more like lobster size!! A lovely way to spend a birthday afternoon.

Fished and walked full beat and honestly say, we felt it was devoid of fish, weather & air temperature were perfect, the water slightly on the low side . Overriding feeling was no fish present. Not value for money!

Great conditions in the morning, Managed to get 5 lovely trout. All within 45mins. No fish rising.
The colour variation between the trout is fascinating, not sure why this is.

First time on this beat. The wading was a little trickier than expected, but manageable with my home-made wading staff. The river was low with little flow in sections. Plenty of hatches: olives and yellow may - although strangely enough, I took both fish on a Caddis Pattern.
1 x nine-inch brown trout (taken on peeping caddis jig)
1 x grayling. As it was OOS I put it back quickly without measuring. But it was a chunky beast. (taken on Klink Caddis Green)
Unforecast rain stopped play at 4 p.m. so I couldn't add to my tally, but I'm happy enough with this pair.

Note: If the chap from Cheltenham who shared the beat has lost a Grey's fishing reel case, I've picked it up and can post it, if he gets in touch.
