Enjoyable days fishing however barbed wire across the river in several places made it difficult to move up river

A beautiful day on a beautiful beat, cloudless skies and very warm, masses of fly life but mostly in spinner form, very few flies actually emerging today but I did see one Mayfly, one or two Large Brook Duns and a few other upswings and caddis but rising trout were few and far between and quite small. Nevertheless I persevered with dries and took 6 trout and missed/lost a few others too so it was a lovely day on the river.

A beautiful day in amazing countryside, however the fishing was tough! There was a small hatch of Olives and Mays late morning which did tempt the odd fish to the surface but overall little sign of fish.

This beat is very much 'pocket water' with only a few runs and pools however did manage to weedle out a fish and a few takes in surprisingly unlikely places. This must be one of the most isolated beats that WuF manage - ideal if you like solitude!

4 trout in the net 6-9", all on dries. Missed around 6 more, most takes on adams para. Fish were happy to strike at larger flies than I would have expected. Last fish of evening was on a 14 brown mayfly shown in pic and had a brilliant take on a purple haze size 16 in the morning. This beat is fun because the fish are basically textbook. If you drop a fly, drag free in a likely spot, there seemed to be an emphatic take. Good spot for building confidence and having fun.

I bought this permit for one of our party of three anglers, the other two of us are Merthyr AA members. We arrived about 10.30am, a beautiful warm morning , cloudless sky and very light breeze (NE).Fish were rising in the calm water around the weed beds at the southern end, but within half an hour this activity ceased abruptly when the wind freshened a little. Throughout the morning the wiind gradually increased until by 1pm it was quite strong with the odd white crested wave just beginning to appear. It then gradually lessened throughout the rest of the day, until it was a light breeze by late afternoon early evening. But there was no sign of surface feeding fish again except for the occasional splashy take or jumping well out in the middle of the reservoir. We stopped fishing at approx. 7pm.
We fished a variety of common imitative nymph and buzzer patterns on hook sizes 10-14, both weighted and unweighted on leaders down to 3lb b.s. but had no takes. A most enjoyable day out in beautiful surroundings but no contact with the fish. Birds of note, cuckoo and tree pipit.
