Fishing:Winter Grayling

26 x grayling 9-17 inches, 7 x out of season trout 10-14 inches. The river still high but reasonably clear so possible now to trot through those slacks and eddies which are not too turbulent. A full 11 degrees this afternoon. But the day ended in disaster, when I somehow left the top section of my beautiful Greys Bewick trotting rod across the bonnet of the car without putting it away in the bag. I drove away unknowing and of course it came off in the road - I screeched to a halt with the hazard lights on just in time to watch two trucks drive over it! Idiot! I wonder if Greys have a section?

My angling partner and I dead bait fished around 8 swims each on beats 1, 2 and 5 and only managed one run between us for the day, the river was running off and slightly coloured perfect conditions for a days pike fishing that said there was very little fish movement throughout the day we only noticed 6 fish break surface two of which being salmon/sea trout. The pike we caught was very thin for this time of year but with the river being in flood so much this season it was expected.

Tried again today, river was lower although clarity was about the same as yesterday. Managed two Grayling one at about
7oz the other maybe 12oz. Young fish, but good to see they are there again. Both fell to big pink nymphs and fished on a
nymphing line with coloured bite indicator markings.

Another Christmas trip to Pontithel, river was high but not too bad. Fished as best I could but no joy. I like this stretch
but hate the parking by the busy road.

Fishing for Barbel, we had one bite all day (between us). The river was very high and very fast.
