Misty start but the sun soon showed its face and another great day to be on the river. River itself was still dropping slowly from last weekends rain but still coloured. Settled into a swim that looked ideal and I could hold bottom about halfway with a 2oz feeder. No fish so moved after 2hrs and chose a swim 50 yards downstream. Initially fed heavily with groundbait feeder and pellet. First barbel at 2pm then caught steadily throughout the afternoon ending with 6 barbel and one chub. All fish over 6lb with best 9lb 1oz. Finished at 5pm to travel home a very contented angler.

Popped onto the river near the chain bridge restaurant for an hour before dusk. Landed 4, lost 1 between the two of us. Still a lot of water to manage getting your flies into!

First time on this beat, would love to see what it looks like under normal river levels, the river was still up but dropping ,the banks were kamikaze after the recent floods,so had to be very careful.Arrived to a very cold foggy morning, which didn’t clear till middle of morning, worked really hard for the 4 chub, chucked the kitchen sink at them but they weren’t having any of it,but that’s fishing, will be back definitely as there looks some really good pegs over the whole stretch.

cold foggy start to the day, haven't fished this beat for a few years, it seemed it went down hill for a while ( I think the otters had something to do with that!) so it great to see it back on form. it is one of the most beautiful stretches of water you will see but too much to cover in just one day! I only really fished the bottom third of the beat today and unbeknownst to me I was sharing the same bit as someone else ! we never met until the end of the day. water clear and at a nice level ( 0.65 on the climery gauge) but I was amazed to see by the leaf line on the fields how high the flood was on the weekend , it must have been 10 feet up! euro nymphing all day grayling to 16" trout to 14"

Did plan on giving the Llynfi , Pontithel , a bash today , but saw last night got pipped at the post , never mind , back up plan was to head to Abbey Dore . . . . . . .

Turned up at the lovely Abbey Dore beat just before ten , tackled up the usual six foot rod , as it's a bit tight under the canopy , and bimbled down to the beat start , initially trying heavy nymphs , with one good follow from a cracking grayling , a couple of rises seen at half passed ten , so swapped nymphs for a tan klinkhammer , and immediate response , although an OOS brownie , was still a cracking fish and quickly slipped back in , perhaps twelve inches . . . .

The morning went like that with some cracking sport , albeit brownies , smashing the klinkhammer , water still pretty deep in places , and still a bit coloured , with a good flow too it !!!!!

The three hours were great fun , was hoping to locate the grayling , swapped dry for a heavy nymph on three occasions , but no joy , seemed like it was just the trout looking up for a good feed today , and the brownies are not yet in their " pulling attire " , and the seven I had today ranged from fourteen to seven inches , and some real puff in them too . Three of the fish gave me a right run around on the two weight rod .

All in all a really fun three hours , no ladies caught , but still nice to be on the Dore , shall maybe give it another bash in a few days , after a hectic weeks work , that was just the ticket !!!!!!

Looked good at 1pm when arrived , opted first swim over bridge , bit too confined with that height of water , moved down and hit chub first cast ,after a little corn loose fed , took 4 in a 45min session float fishing ,then it seemed to shut down ,straight led with 3oz struggled to hold where I wanted it and constant leaves , weed and debris, meant I was bringing in kit every 10 mins . lost 3 Barbel and landed 3 up to 6lbs+ all on golf ball sizes of Aldi chopped ham with pork , in that flow bites were savage , another great day on the Wye , thank you all concerned....

Tried luncheon meat for four hours without success. Then switched to maggots with swim feeder. Two barbel were caught straight away on consecutive casts, one about 6lbs and one about 8lbs. had to pack up then to go home. Wish we had started using maggots earlier. River conditions ideal, weather sunny and warm. Will go back again and fish differently. lovely section of the wye!!

The banks were quite treacherous and the river was still recovering from the weekend floods. All fish taken on luncheon meat at the last downstream swim. All barbel were monsters, 9lb, 9lb 1oz and the biggest at 10lb 8oz. Lost 1 more when hook pulled out and also lost half a dozen chub in the nearbank snags, they certainly know exactly where they are!!!
