Had a real struggle today, only managed to catch one small dace. Trout were there, surfacing occasionally but we completely failed to discover what they were eating. It was still an enjoyable day and Llangoed pool was a beautiful place to spend it in.

Single small grayling taken on a black spider. River still low after dry summer but a touch of colour after overnight rain.

After three months away from the Wye, I had Gromain all to myself for the afternoon: a thoroughly enjoyable reaquaintance with this stunning part of the river made all the better by a surprise encounter with Kevin, the Otter.
Water lowish, but helped me to learn where some of the channels and boulders are for future reference. .
Brilliant to see all of the completed works on the upper sections of the beat, including plenty of new boards that make covering the gutters far easier - very much looking forward to fishing up here after the next spate!

Water level low, weather bright, fished various swims but success was from the gravel bank 2 chub on pellet 2 on rolled meat, unfortunately no barbel this year, good to see this stretch back on the passport. Access is better being able to drive right down to main stretch, not many canoes, great day on this lovely stretch of water.

Water very clear and cold for August, so thought at an ideal level there was very little fly life hatching and not much movement to a French leader with bugs on the bottom. All fish brought to the net took a dry fly with others also risen to Parachute Adams and Griffifths Gnat. Best fish a stunning 16" Brown which rose from deep and then leapt several times across the pool in surprise at being hooked. Similar tactics worked much better next day on the Cammarch Hotel water, where French leader and deep bugs accounted for several browns and grayling and a best grayling of 15 1/2" came to a Griffifths Sparkle Gnat.

A good day with fish caught steadily throughout the day. Fish to 6lb and all in excellent condition despite the lack of water in the river.

5 Barbel
