Not the best day for my first time on this beat, 18C, overcast with frequent heavy showers and wind gusting at 30mph, but at least it was upstream for once!
Fishing was very difficult in the wind, I spotted a decent trout which slunk away under a tree as I approached and I began to loose heart. Things started looking up after I had a take on a dear hair caddis dry fly followed by a several more...all of which I missed, I think they were small fish. I was beginning to think I wasn’t going to catch when I got to a nice deep pool and swapped the dry for a PTN and third cast I hit into a very good fish which fought like a tiger on my 7’ #3 rod, finally in the net was a stunningly coloured, immaculate brown trout of at least 23” and probably over 3.5lb, a new PB and a stunning fish, very, very happy, thank you WUF.

Only fished for a couple of hours in the evening. Horrible wind gusting straight down the river. Frustrating conditions. Very few rises and little fly life. However, a pretty beat and will definitely return for a longer session.

Some mayfly about but very few fish rising. caught a 11" trout on a pt nymph then landed 3 trout on a dry mayfly of 11" 15" & 17". The biggest gave me a nerve jangling fight as it tried its best to get in the far bank tree roots. Some nice pools to fish when you can get down to the river.

Skinny water bright , no hatches , very hard fishing but easy wading and walking after 2 days on the rocks . I prefer the rugged bedrock beats even if they do kill my knees 2 tiddlers , left at 7 pm due to long drive home , Long stretches of slow water and not many shady deep hiding places . Not my kind of Usk fishing

Another hard day on the Usk. It was cold, wet and windy but this is still a lovely stretch of water. We did not catch anything and saw little sign of fish at the surface, with the exception of one short stretch just above the large pool at the bottom of the beat. Here we both tried without success to catch at least one of what seemed to be many fish feeding at the surface over a period of about 2 hours. We tried everything: many dry patters and sizes, emergers, spiders.... No idea what they were feeding on but we certainly did not have anything like it - not a single bit of interest in anything we had to offer.
