No sign of grayling. Two rods ( one very experienced) fished nymphs all day for one oos 9" trout. After several trips to the Monnow at Skenfrith this winter two issues have emerged: Oliver Burch's reports of a reduced fish population in the last two years at this beat are convincing and the recent well above inflation price hike was not well timed.
Parking: we did not park at the pub but used the area in front of the castle and we found the local people were very friendly.

After a chilly start and several moves we fished the deeper swims as the water temperature picked up - 1 Brown Trout, 1 Dace, 2 Barbel but 1 slipped the small barbless hook. Nice day, lovely venue.

River in perfect condition (0.7 on the Ross gauge with a bit of colour) and a very mild bright day to go with it. Feeder and pellet was the successful method, except for the chub which fell to meat. Most of the barbel were around the 4lb to 6lb mark, but the last cast of the day produced a fish of 7lb-14. An exceptional session for the time of year.

8 Barbel, 1 Chub

Fly fishing for pike - no sign of a fish until dusk- it was a bright day which doesn’t help - hooked and lost a jack pike, then hooked and lost another about 10lbs. Nevertheless a good day and a great beat

In total contrast to the last time i fished when the river was way up!River back down to normal winter level. At present this stretch is being very kind to me as on a glorious spring like day in the Wye Valley I recorded my third double from this beat. only the one barbel but what a stunning looking beast and in mint condition and what a scrap - 10lb 7oz of pure perfection. The bite came out of the blue in late afternoon and finished the day off with a couple of chub at dusk. Will be back real soon!!
