1st time ever on the Wye, tried freelining meat to explore all the river. Not a lot of flow and lost as many I caught, guessing barbless hooks didn't hold when striking through the meat. Still not a bad day all things considered.
The other was an eel

1st fishing trip in nearly 8 years! Only 3 fish but nice to be back on the river. Started at 3pm, 1st cast saw a chub on the hook before I had time to place the rod in the rest! Foch of 3.5/4lb. Barbel came at 4.45 and 7pm. Didn't fish the peg I wanted as another angler in the opposite side was wading half way out in the shallows and fishing Caple Court side..... And pulled out 28 fish! 9 of which were caught whilst I was there!
Lovely session and looking forward to my return visit in a couple of weeks, hopefully I'll get the swim I want.

Water temp was 16.3. Air temp went from 17 to 23. Hardly any fly coming off the water but the fish seemed pretty willing to rise. Most fish took either a 14 hair ear emerger or a 16 hair ear nymph. It was great to see such a wide variety in the size of the fish. Largest fish, both graying and trout measured 12 inches.
The fish had apparently been reading up on where in the river they are supposed to be.
The 2 others were salmon parr.
The Holiday cottage was actually empty when I came to the pools n front of it but I didn’t realise till too late.

Beautiful beat and a great day out. Few trout rising but no salmon. Sadly lost my landing net after falling in!

Water low and clear. We did an interesting side by side comparison of pva bags and pellet feeder- the bags caught twice the number of fish in the low water.
One lovely fish stalked from under the feet pool and the bottom of the beat. Lovely scenery and day out as always.

Arrived early afternoon with overcast conditions and fish were rising regularly in the slow moving pools. I began with Greenwells Glory but soon saw some very pale yellow flies coming off the water. I changed to the palest yellow dry fly I had and cast repeatedly under an overhanging tree. behind which I'd see a fish take. After a few casts, he came up for it out of the depths and was about to take it when (this being my first outing of the season) I got over excited and pulled it out of his mouth. I persevered and managed to tempt him up a second time. This time he took it and turned, but I was slow on this one and he spat it out after a splash. Then the sun came out and all went much quieter. we tried fishing the faster water at the top of the beat but were inhibited by dog walkers and a couple of people paddling. we had to leave before the witching hour sadly, but rises were evident on the walk back to Abergavenny and it was a glorious afternoon/evening on the river. The river levels were low, but there were numerous surface feeding fish, some of them sizeable I'm sure. A pricey beat for limited access and the walkway has pretty much eroded away, but if you're in better form than I was, many fish could be caught here I'm sure.

Thank you WUF for a wonderful days fishing. Tried fishing the upper section in waders and trotting sweet corn, but besides catching a couple of resident chub, no barbel could be seen. Went down stream and saw a large shoal flashing in fast shallow water. To only get to them by wading. We caught 1 barbel of approx 7lb and then lots of 4-5 chub which was nice but not our target quarry. It was a beautiful day and we had some adventures. Thank you.
