Conditins were good, including the water. But only small fish seemed to be feeding up to 2pm when I had to stop, both on the surface and on nymphs which I was using.

River low and clear ,weather dry & mostly overcast, pleasantly warm. Few fish rising but couldn't tempt them, had the smallest grayling I've ever seen on a black GH nymph.
Plusses: saw dippers, small pearl bordered fritillaries and red kites.
Minusses: saw a mink, a goosander and a very thin lamb which appeared to have a very bad or broken back leg.

A perfect fishing day. Water a little coloured is my only excuse. Didn't see a fish all day, but the beat has benefitted greatly from Micks influence with all pools obvious and a delight to fish. Had every confidence of a Salmon, but alas only shad could see the fly!

Fished dry fly all afternoon, parachute type or deer hair wing. Thanks to the angler who left one of the latter hanging in a tree; it worked well. Caught 20+ trout up to 9" but most were 5-6". Missed many more and lost a few. Mayfly were in the air all afternoon plus other flies that I failed to identify. The rocks here are very slippery with algae, especially higher up the beat. I had studded waders but felt-soled plus studs would have been better.

Greeted by a very friendly and helpful owner. This is a lovely beat with a lot of variety. There were a lot of Mayfly coming off most of the day, but never saw one taken. However, did catch a couple of nice fish in riffles on a Mayfly nymph. Very few fish rising all day and never caught a fish on a dry. Spent a long time trying to get in position to cast to one very big trout in Chain pool only to see it melt away when I was about to cast. However, had more success after switching to Klink and dink and a small copperhead Mary took several fish in the glides including two lovely fish of 2 to 2.5 lbs. Will definitely fish this beat again on my next Welsh trip.

8 x trout 6-13 inches, Monnow Gosling. Another hard work kind of afternoon, hot with a big wind blowing this time, but still almost no fish rising. Still there were some mayfly about and prospecting the likely spots brought a few fish up. Holding the fish to unhook them, I had the feeling their tight stomachs were already jammed full of mayfly! And mayfly were having their disco dance in the shelter of a hedge as I set off for home.
