Hard work in bright sunny conditions. River was in good condition and nymphs seemed to be the choice.

Smashing beat with a good variety of water. The day was clear and bright, rising fish of which there were few turned out to be mostly Grayling.

We did a recce upto Llynfi Talgarth in the morning where we met and had a chat with Kim Tribe but decided to fish Pontithel as Talgarth was very over grown. Plenty of fly life including a few May fly but again nothing rising. Caught a few on weighted nymphs until we came across a few fish rising.
Ended up casting to 3 Trout in as many metres, lost 2 acrobatic ones and landed 1 nice fish around 12 inches on a small F fly.
Found fish rising in the top pool and landed 1 Grayling.

A glorious day on a lovely stretch of river that I have previously only fished for grayling, but there are plenty of fesity trout too. Quite a bit of fly life around in in the early afternoon and a few rising fish, so two or three caught on dries the rest on a GRHE nymph. River very low. Wading can be tricky in places. Rock is not slippery, just slabs of bedrock with awkward steps, but the strata helps create the deep gutters that stay cool in low flows so can't complain. The trout seem to like the gutters.

Water low and gin clear 1' on guage. No fish seen. Very bright and hot day. Salmon fishing waste of time really but long way to travel from Kent. Enjoyed the day very much and impressed with the fishery. Booked this beat when the Wye was in flood.

Wet spider initially, one take but no connection. Changed to dry fly as there was some fly on the water. There was some Grannon hatching and a few Olives. There was an intermittent rise, most of it on the smoother water. A lovely beat to fish and a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Good wading and lots of wildlife to see. Definitely worth another visit.
