What a great day, Mick the Ghillie picked the correct fly a 2"" brass tube fly green and yellow. He told me to fish the stones and on the second run down that afternoon I hooked and landed a fresh salmon about 15lbs in mint condition. It gave a great fight and had lots left when Mick lifted it in the net. My biggest Salmon to date. Later in the day I fly fished Vanstone pool and Mick spun the deep part of the end of the pool and hooked a nice fish. It was splashing on the surface and spat the hook out. Looked a very good fish 15lbs to 18lbs. Great day on a good beat. I would have not fished the swim or that big a fly. So thank you Mick see you soon.

Beautiful location, cold unfortunately but we will be back again. 3 of us fishing, I was fishing under the road bridge and blanked. One of my brothers was fishing approximately 50 yards up stream from me and caught 1 trout and 1 Grayling. My other brother was fishing about 20 yards up stream from him and caught 7 Trout and 7 Grayling. They will not let me forget this until we come back next year.

Like most Usk beats easy to find and easy to access. It also offers pretty easy wading for those who enjoy more security underfoot. Plenty of varied fishing and just about enough water for two rods for the day.
Welcomed by a cold northerly wind blowing down the river. Never really got going, gave up at lunchtime for the long drive home, cheered by Leicester City getting 3 points closer!

First time on the Chainbridge Beat, it's a lovely beat. Weather was cold and not much rising, even though there was a fair hatch around 12. Fished it through with the salmon rod first, no sign of any fish, but some lovely fly pools, will be back for another go soon.
Took a few trout to 3/4 lb on deep fished nymphs.
Many thanks to Barry for his kind advice.

Recovering just in time from the shock and disbelief of hooking a Wye Springer I held my spool and piled on the pressure as it made a bid for a sunken roots (do Salmon dive for snags?), a few runs later and it shock its head in front of me and spat out a crumpled flying C with 2 bent hooks. Following contemplation and wader repair at lunch I hooked another and a fine fresh fish of around 8lb came to the net hooks the fell out and it was away. Half the size of the lost fish but it was my first Salmon! Fished most of the limited accessible areas on the beat, action from Marl beds. Thanks WUF.

A lovely stretch of river - we arrived early in the morning and set up. The river is a mixture of a lot of very deep pools and faster, shallower water. We found the faster water more productive and landed our first fish that were 14 to 15 inches each. We then found a bigger pool with a couple of fish rising - we took a nice fish on a small dry fly and then the pool came alive! There must have been 20 - 30 different fish boiling taking mayfly off the surface along with olives. A Mayfly emerger pattern went on and instantly got taken! We landed a very respectable fish of around 19 inches that gave a great fight. We then finished up the day by picking up a few more fish with nymphs in the various pools before having to end slightly early then we wanted to head back to the real world... We will be back.

It was a lovely day, warmer compared to Saturday. This stretch of river is very beautiful, fast and slow pools, bedrocks of any shape which makes the fishing very technical. We fished from 10 to 12 without seeing any rise, then some shy bites on nymphs and then just after midday a hatch of olives started which moved few fishes on a dry fly. All of a sudden a squadron of 7/8 canoes was seen upstream, perfect, exactly when the hatch was at its top moment, and considering how cold is the USK water these days and the restricted window you've got during Olives hatches this is wonderful. So I sat down reviewed the fishery rules and saw that canoeing is permitted until 2 March so I am wondering what those canoes were doing there? I sat down thinking of waiting a bit as maybe in 30 mins/1hr the river will go back to normal until after about 20 minutes I spotted another squadron of 6/7 happy individuals coming down noisily under our annoyed look. We decided to move towards the top of the beat on a long deep pool that looked very promising we wait to see if the hatches produced any rising fish but after a while another groups of canoes came down. Needless to say that the activity was definitively over, the top of the hatch was over and we didn’t see any more fish for the day.
I took pictures of these people as I was wondering how they managed to get permissions of canoeing since we are on 24th April and also considering the water levels.
The following Monday I have informed the WUF office, those individuals were acting illegally, they did not have any permissions to enter the beat and/or the property.
PLEASE NOTE that if this happens to you the only thing you can do is asking them to leave to river immediately and you should also ask them which group/association they belongs to (assuming they will tell you) then report it to the WUF Office. The chaps I saw on Sunday told me they asked all permissions to the authorities and Environment Agency (??!). Although they seemed very polite and apologetic they acted very dishonestly.
A wonderful fishing day RUINED by a group of fraudulent, deceitful individuals.
