An enjoyable beat to fish. I had no takes and therefore no fish either but this is likely my inexperience at river fishing. I tried numerous winged flies and nymphs but without success.
In the up stream slow river areas there were good fishing taking on the surface.
It is slightly difficult to access the river but there are enough entry points and I walked a fair way once into the water. I would fish this beat again

No rain and no salmons, so trout fishing in the afternoon. Lots of small trout and grayling on wets and drys, great fun.

Great day on the creel, found the fish from the first cast and caught throughout the day literally every cast. No chub smaller the 2.5lb and the barbel were all between 6-8lb. Pellet feeder and pellet hookbaits responsible for all the fish.

Well a good day was had by DH and myself, the former catching a record 35 fish, mostly trout to 1 1/2lb. I caught my second Wye salmon of the week! This was a 12lb hen fish. She was a little thin and with some colour. She need some oxygenation before swimming off.

The split second she took my fly I slipped and fell in! Just what you want.... When trying to put her back in the water, I had become entangled with my line and it tripped me up, and I fell in again, this time whilst holding a salmon!! Only after when I went to retrieve my rod did I notice that the tripping incident had snapped my rod in two sections..... s**t...

What a ridiculous day. I am in no way an expert fisherman, but somehow I managed to catch 51 fish! It was crazy.
This is yet another beautiful location, this time on the small but perfectly formed River Lugg. Fast sections, slow sections, deep blue pools, lazy meanders… it has it all. It was overcast all day, with the odd occasional bit of drizzle. I fished from approx. 10am to 8pm using the tried and tested Klinkhammer indicator with gold headed nymphs of differing varieties. I was really after WBT but the river is obviously teeming with Grayling too. I worked from the lower end of the beat to the bridge (where you park) up to about 2pm, then had some lunch and then fished the upper section… and the fish just kept coming. I missed plenty too. A day to remember.

Couldn’t resist the challenge of a new beat on the passport – are we the first fishermen? James learnt to fish on the Severn Arms beats so we have a special affection for this river.
The passport says wading is challenging. You had better believe it! Surprised we only had the one swimming lesson…. and access also not easy, but at least that means the inhabitants of Disserth caravan park are unlikely to wander down this far. We could only get 2/3 of the way down the beat as there is a very large cliff to negotiate and the inhabitants were most definitely not impressed with our intrusion – a pair of peregrine falcons, spectacular, as was the meadow teeming with ringlet butterflies.
So how about the fishing? There were sporadic hatches of olives and pale wateries, with a few mayfly duns and spinners too, so the fish were looking up. 13 fish all on dries – how does a 2” grayling impale itself on a size 14 hook? There are a lot of small grayling on this beat which is great news – perhaps the peregrines deter piscivorous avain predators? Trout were definitely to the fore – 10 vs 3 grayling, and what stunning fish. 4 were 13” or more, the best was an 18” beauty. All fat with huge pectorals and tails, and gave great accounts of themselves. Great to see a beat with so much weed bed too – almost like a chalk stream in places. There was one pocket in the weed that I thought must contain a fish…an 8” er smashed the fly on the first cast, and was straight in to the weed and off…surely there couldn’t be another willing customer? But yes, a 14” beauty followed, over the top of the weed to hand before he had time to think about it….
So all in all challenging fishing but a great days fishing. The beat is much more like a wild stream beat than a passport beat but that wont detract for those prepared to meet the challenges.
